Food Allergy
While Kirkwood School District cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment, we are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for students. Recognizing that the risk of accidental exposure to allergens can be reduced in the school setting, Kirkwood School District is committed to working in cooperation with parents, students, and physicians to minimize risks and provide a safe educational environment for all students.
In order to provide a safe environment during lunch, each elementary school has established peanut/tree nut free designated tables to reduce a student’s exposure to peanuts/tree nuts.
To maintain the health and protect the safety of children who have life-threatening allergies in ways that are developmentally appropriate, the following precautions will be observed:
- The school cafeterias will follow the Chartwells Food Service policy of serving no peanuts/tree nuts or peanut /tree nut products.
- The school nurse, in consultation with the physician and suggestions from the parent, will prepare an Individual Health Plan (IHP) and confidentially share with other staff on a “need to know” basis.
- The school nurse at the elementary school and the middle school levels will notify the cafeteria staff of the students with food allergies.
- Elementary students with peanut/tree nut allergies will be required to sit at a designated peanut/tree nut table. Other students without food allergies may be invited to sit at the designated peanut/tree nut table if they are eating a lunch provided by the school.
While we understand that lunch time is also a social time for students, your child’s safety and well-being is our top priority. A note from the student’s physician will be required to exempt an elementary student from sitting at the designated peanut/tree nut tables in the cafeteria.
