KHS Journalism Students Attend National Conference and are Recognized with Multiple Awards
Members of the Kirkwood High School (KHS) journalism programs were recognized for their work during their attendance at the Journalism Education Association (JEA)/National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Fall National High School Journalism Convention held in St. Louis November 10-13. The convention offers hundreds of instructional sessions, keynote speakers from national newsmakers, dozens of media critiques, JEA’s popular on-site media contests, and the announcement of NSPA national winners for Pacemaker Awards and Individual Awards. This annual event attracts more than 5,000 student journalists and advisors and is the nation’s largest gathering of high school journalists, advisers, and journalism teachers.
Members of The Kirkwood Call and Pioneer yearbook staff received awards in several categories:
The Kirkwood Call and Pioneer were recognized on the Pacemaker 100 list of the Top 100 media programs in NSPA history. The Pacemaker Award is the NSPA’s preeminent award. There is a category for each type of publication — Broadcast, Innovation, Literary Magazine, Online, Newspaper/Newsmagazine, Specialty Magazine, and Yearbook. Entries are judged by teams of professionals based on the following criteria: coverage and content; quality of writing and reporting; leadership; design; photography; and graphics. The Kirkwood Call and Pioneer were recognized on the Pacemaker 100 list of the Top 100 media programs in NSPA history.
Caroline Steidley, senior and TKC editor-in-chief, was announced as First Place in the nation for the NSPA Individual Awards for Story of the Year Editorial category for her editorial piece “Call Ed: Mind Over Matter” published in January 2022: https://www.thekirkwoodcall.com/opinion/2022/01/06/call-ed-mind-over-matter/
Will Huster, senior and Pioneer photo editor, was announced as earning a Superior rating for the NSPA Individual Awards for Sports Feature Photo of the Year.
The Kirkwood Call “Vogue” issue won second Place in NSPA Best of Show and TheKirkwoodCall.com was announced as fourth NSPA Place Best of Show. The Best of Show award does not signify a ranking of national excellence but rather overall excellence among the attendees and their entries.
In addition, KHS journalism alumni Devan Coggan and Sarah Hutchins were featured speakers at the conference.
