Kirkwood High School Performing Art Students Audition at All-State Band and All-State Orchestra Competition
Eight Band and Five Orchestra Students Earn High Marks
On Saturday, December 4, 22 Kirkwood High School band students competed in the Missouri All-State Band, Orchestra and Jazz Band auditions at the University of Missouri-Columbia. There were 1,365 auditions for woodwind, brass and percussion concert band and orchestra wind placement and 290 auditions for jazz band placement.
Of those auditions, eight KHS students were selected to all state, named alternate or honorable mention. They are:
Brandon Vaughn - Clarinet
Sharon Wirth - Clarinet Honorable Mention
Liz Myers - Bassoon
Abigail Konopik - French Horn
Hanna Pierce - Alternate Baritone
Jacob Buchek - Tuba
Carter Bowman - Jazz Baritone Saxophone (Chose Alto Saxophone)
Carter Bowman - Jazz Alto Saxophone
Kai Sanford - Jazz Piano – Alternate
The students selected as all-state will have the opportunity to perform with the Missouri All-State Winds and Percussion will travel to the Missouri Music Educator Association Convention on January 26th for 3 days of intensive rehearsals with Dr. Rodney Dorsey of Indiana University School of Music. This experience will culminate with a performance on Saturday, January 29th.
“The KHS band program had a great day at the Missouri All State Band, Orchestra and Jazz Band auditions,” said Rebecca Friesen, Kirkwood School District Band Director. “Kirkwood High School represented incredibly well with 22 entries, and we are proud of all the students who qualified to be part of this incredible process.”

Kirkwood High School Orchestra Students Compete in All-State Orchestra
ON Saturday December 4, 10 Kirkwood High School orchestra students competed in the Missouri All-State Orchestra Auditions at the University of Missouri-Columbia. There were 305 high school age students from across the state of Missouri who auditioned for 69 string openings in the All-State Orchestra.
Of those auditions, five KHS students were selected to all-state, named alternate or honorable mention. They are:
Katherine Klein, Double Bass Alternate
Mallory Mihm, Viola
Margaret Klein, 2nd Violin
Quinn Judge, Double Bass
Trey Rolfes, Double Bass Alternate
These five students will perform during the 2022 MMEA State Conference at Tan-Tar-A in January.
“The students were selected after performing multiple scales and excerpts from major orchestral literature,” said Fariga Drayton, Kirkwood School District Orchestra Director. “I am extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to their music practice.”
