Kirkwood High School students attend JEA Convention in Chicago
Fifteen student journalists from The Kirkwood Call, Pioneer yearbook and KHTV broadcast attended the Journalism Education Association National Convention in Chicago, Il., Nov. 1-3. With the second largest attendance in the convention’s history, more than 6,397 students from across the country attended the convention to attend learning sessions, participate in competitions and celebrate scholastic journalism. In addition, students met with professors and students from several universities and publishing companies to have their work critiqued.

Eight Kirkwood High School journalism students were recognized in national write-off competitions. Students could earn an Honorable Mention, Excellent and Superior.

Pacemaker
The Kirkwood Call was named a Pacemaker WINNER for the 2017-18 school year. The Call was one of 28 newspapers in the country to earn the award deemed the Pulitzer Prize of scholastic journalism in the Newsmagazine category.
Best of Show
The Kirkwood High School 2017 The KirkwoodCall.com was awarded a 4th Place Best of Show award and The Kirkwood Call newspaper was awarded 1st place in the Special Edition category for “The Issues Issue.”
“Going to JEA gave me an experience I never had before,” Izzy Colón, senior and member of The Kirkwood Call, said. “It gave me the opportunity to learn how to find stories in places I’ve never been before.”
