KHS Vocal Jazz Ensemble Performs in Jefferson City

Rising Kirkwood High School seniors Matt Johnson, Mary Cleary, Aly Terry, Kenan Dogan and two alternates Cece Herwig and Maddie Hawes, were among 16 students selected throughout the state to perform in the Missouri All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble in Jefferson city at the annual Missouri Choral Directors Association (MCDA) Conference in Jefferson City, MO on July 19, 2018.

The ensemble is one of the most difficult to make as there are only 16 spots from across the state which includes high school and college performers. The audition is blind and based solely on each singer's recorded performance.

"I am bursting with pride over these student's talents and hard work,” said David Cannon, Kirkwood High School vocal music director. "They gave up many days this summer to achieve the level of performance that was evident during the performance at the Capitol Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom in front of an audience of more than 400 music directors, parents, and families from around the state,” Cannon said.

The students performed fresh new arrangements of "Autumn Leaves," "Kiss from a Rose," and a bring down the house gospel closer written by the guest director, Michael Engelhardt, called "Rise."
