Oasis Recognition Ceremony at Kirkwood School District
On Monday, May 13, representatives from Oasis held a recognition ceremony to honor Dr. Judy Kamper for 30 years of service as the District Facilitator for the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program in the Kirkwood School District (KSD).
Oasis tutoring was launched nationally in 1989, the same year that Dr. Kamper helped to establish it in Kirkwood. At that time, Kamper served KSD as the Director of Special Programs. After retiring in 2000, Kamper continued her role as a tutoring facilitator for Oasis. Over the past 30 years, she has provided support to over 540 older adults who have served as Oasis tutors in all five Kirkwood elementary schools. Kamper hosts monthly meetings with volunteer tutors currently working in KSD. This year, approximately 55 tutors serve KSD students and schools.
“We are so thankful for Dr. Kamper’s dedication and commitment to our tutors, and ultimately to the hundreds of children whose lives have been impacted in Kirkwood alone,” says Mary Click, national Intergenerational Tutoring director.
Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring is a volunteer program that pairs older adults with children in grades K-3 to work one-on-one each week as their tutors, mentors and friends. Oasis tutors use a six-step approach to literacy designed by educators that emphasizes improved reading, speaking, listening and writing. The largest older adult tutoring program in the U.S., Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring has reached more than 444,000 children nationwide. In 2018, Oasis tutors helped 21,000 children in 682 schools across the country. Currently, more than 4,500 Oasis tutors volunteer with the program in over 20 U.S. cities.
Oasis is a national education organization that promotes healthy aging through lifelong learning, active lifestyles and service. In addition to tutoring, Oasis offers stimulating programs in the arts, humanities, technology and volunteer opportunities to older adults in more than 250 communities through nine educational centers and a national network of over 700 community partners.
