Kirkwood School District Students Compete in Gifted Resource Council’s Equations Contest
Kirkwood kids competed in the annual Gifted Resource Council’s Academic Challenge Cup, a series of friendly academic competitions in math and creative problem-solving for St. Louis area students in grades 2 – 8. This year’s event took place at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL).
Student teams from Keysor Elementary, Westchester Elementary, and North Kirkwood Middle School competed in the equations competition on February 27 and March 1. All teams were recognized as a “Team of Excellence,” meaning they finished in the top three places for their grade level on their competition day. Some 111 teams competed over the three day contest. During the equations competition, students play a creative math game that provides players with practice in arithmetic operations and assist in developing an understanding of number concepts, number systems, factors, primes, order of operations, and simple algebraic equations. The competition engages students in high-level thinking in a friendly competitive spirit.
A blended team of Keysor and Westchester third-grade students includes Toby Aholt, Sean Petron, Owen Wilhelm, Charlie Wonsidler from Keysor, and Cooper Scheessele from Westchester. Owen and Cooper also earned individual awards.
The Keysor fourth-grade equations team members are Matt Bain, Sam Muchnick, Johnny Tsacoumangos, and Teddy Zagora. Matt and Johnny also earned individual recognition for their performance.
The Keysor fifth-grade equations team members are Simon Aholt, Reichen Bechtel, Stephen Dowell, Coen Untereiner, and Paul Wonsidler. Simon, Stephen, Coen, and Paul also earned individual awards.
The three North Kirkwood Middle School teams are A: Jake Ernst (fifth grade); Derrick Araneta, Sofia Mancini, and Jack Wheeler (sixth grade); B: Andrew Bain, Josephine Kim, Jackson Scheesele, and Jamie Zagora (seventh grade); and C: Kaiden Molina and Ray Pokoski (seventh grade), and Finn Greenberg and Travis Luth (eighth grade). Andrew, Jackson, and Jamie also earned individual recognition for their performance.
Kirkwood resident Bob Coulter was the volunteer coach for all KSD equations club teams.
