KHS Racquetball Team Sweeps National Championships

Kirkwood High School (KHS) boy’s and girl’s racquetball teams were crowned the Overall Team National Champions at the USA Racquetball High School Championships held last weekend in St. Louis, MO. Kirkwood Racquetball swept all three division in the tournament, winning Men’s Women’s and Overall Team National Titles. This is the third consecutive overall title for the KHS Racquetball Team.

 

The athletes completed against 326 racquetball players from 24 schools and 5 different states. Kirkwood had 89 student-athlete representatives who played 480 matches.

 

Highlights include:

FIVE ALL-AMERICANS

  • Alexis Boyko (fresh), Harry Bogatko (jr), Margaret McPheeters (jr), Mia Risch (sr) and Charlie Vonder Bruegge (jr) were named USA Racquetball All-Americans

GIRLS SINGLES

  • Mia Risch (sr) placed first in Girls #1 blue singles
  • Alexis Boyko (fresh) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION of girls #2 gold singles
  • Margaret McPheeters (jr) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION of girls #3 gold singles
  • Karsten Oppermann (fresh) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION of girls #4 gold singles
  • Leyna Davis (jr) placed fourth in girls #5 singles
  • Rebecca Christopher (fresh) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION of girls #6 gold singles (that was an 89-person bracket!)
  • Grace Poole (fresh) placed fourth in girls #6 gold singles
  • Katie Whittaker (sr) placed second in girls #6 blue singles
  • Sloane Stevens (soph) placed third in girls #6 blue singles
  • Grace Bastow (fresh) placed first in girls #6 red singles
  • Fallon Pettit (soph) placed first in girls #6 white singles
  • Emily Evans (soph) placed third in girls #6 white singles

BOYS SINGLES

  • Harry Bogatko (jr) placed fourth in boys #1 blue singles
  • Charlie Vonder Bruegge (jr) placed third in boys #2 gold singles
  • Henry Prien (soph) placed second in boys #3 gold singles
  • John Vonder Bruegge (jr) placed second in boys #4 gold singles
  • Jacob Poole (jr) placed second in boys #5 gold singles
  • Graham Sperato (soph) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION of boys #6 gold singles (it was a 124-person bracket!)
  • Jack Strobach (jr) placed second in boys #6 gold singles
  • Harrison Ganschaw (jr) placed third in boys #6 gold singles
  • Deven Peterson (jr) placed fourth in boys #6 gold singles
  • Dawson Grimm (soph) placed first in boys #6 red singles
  • Ben Wagganer (soph) placed third in boys #6 red singles
  • Ryan Talir (soph) placed fourth in boys #6 red singles
  • Sam Krus (fresh) placed fourth in boys #6 white singles

GIRLS DOUBLES

  • Mia Risch (sr) and Margaret McPheeters (jr) are the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS of girls #1 doubles
  • Alexis Boyko (fresh) and Karsten Oppermann (fresh) are the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS of girls #2 doubles
  • Grace Poole (fresh) and Rebecca Christopher (fresh) placed fourth in girls #3 doubles
  • Sonya Lang (jr) and Sophie Gampp (jr) placed first in girls #3 consolation doubles
  • Sloane Stevens (soph) and Grace Bastow (fresh) placed second in girls #3 consolation doubles
  • Sarah Duncan (jr) and Anna Huebner (jr) placed third in girls #3 consolation doubles
  • Fallon Pettit (soph) and Lucy Upmeyer (jr) placed fourth in girls #3 consolation doubles

BOYS DOUBLES

  • Harry Bogatko (jr) and Charlie Vonder Bruegge (jr) placed second in boys #1 doubles
  • Henry Prien (soph) and John Vonder Bruegge (jr) are the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS of boys #2 doubles
  • Deven Peterson (jr) and Harrison Ganschaw (jr) are the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS of boys #3 doubles
  • Jacob Poole (jr) and Graham Sperato (soph) placed second in boys #3 doubles
  • Alexander Pozzo (soph) and Nate Raeber (soph) placed first in boys #3 consolation doubles
  • Charlie Norlander (jr) and Ben Wagganer (soph) placed second in boys #3 consolation doubles

MIXED DOUBLES

  • Mia Risch (sr) and Charlie Vonder Bruegge (jr) placed second in mixed #1 doubles
  • Alexis Boyko (fresh) and Harry Bogatko (jr) placed third in mixed #2 doubles
  • Margaret McPheeters (jr) and Henry Prien (soph) placed second in mixed #3 doubles
  • Fallon Pettit (soph) and Michael Simkins (soph) placed second in mixed #3 consolation doubles
  • Lucy Upmeyer (jr) and Charlie Norlander (jr) placed fourth in mixed #3 consolation doubles

The Kirkwood Racquetball Team is coached by head coaches are Dan Whitley of Vetta Sports and Daniel Witt (KHS class of 2014). Other coaches include Thomas Bottchen (class of 2010), Emily Butler (class of 2023), Emily Harrod (class of 2014), Jenna Heaton (class of 2016), Justin Heaton (class of 2011), Madison Myers (class of 2015), Bradley Skeens (class of 2012), and Andrew Von Gerichten (class of 1999).

The coaches were blown away by our students' grit and will to win,” said Witt. “Most importantly, they were fountains of spirit and sportsmanship, taking their wins and losses with a smile on their face and respect for their opponents. We couldn't be prouder."
