Hundreds of Kirkwood School District Students Participate in Fourth Annual Unified Flag Football Event
On Wednesday, October 16, hundreds of Kirkwood School District (KSD) students participated in the fourth annual Unified Night Lights unified flag football event. The inaugural event was held in September 2016. The event recreates the excitement of a traditional football game. Hundreds of students, with and without disabilities, came together. The philosophy behind the event is that sports help provide a path to friendships and understanding and help break down barriers. Students stormed the field, cheered from the track, and played instruments from the pep band section in the bleachers.
Prior to the event, the participants and their families, along with members of the KHS football team came together for a pre-game meal in the high school cafeteria.
New this year, Unified Night Lights was held on World Food Day. World Food Day is a day of action dedicated to tackling global hunger. People from around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate worldwide hunger from our lifetime. KSD held a collection for KirkCare, a local pantry that supports families in the KSD with food and utility support. KirkCare announced that collections on the night of Unified Night Lights will provide over 1,500 meals to local families.
“This event represents everybody and is an example of what our community can do when we come together, to support one another,” said Brandie Martine, a KSD parent and co-planner of the event.
