Kirkwood High School Student Selected as Honorable Mention in New York Times Writing Contest
Kirkwood High School junior Emery Bowman
was one of 46 students across the country announced with an Honorable Mention Award in the New York Times 100-Word Personal Narrative Contest for her story “Closet.”
The contest invites students to write a short, powerful story about a meaningful experience from their lives in 100 words or fewer.
To prepare for the writing exercise, students in Katie Meyers’ AP Language and Composition class reviewed the New York Times style section’s “Tiny Love Stories” series as a guide to write about a life experience in a short, powerful story about a particular moment or event in their life. Students were challenged to tell their story in their unique voice while also demonstrating the importance and reason for telling their story so the reader can reflect on a relatable universal message.
