Kirkwood High School Students Sweep Writing Awards in St. Louis Holocaust Museum Art and Writing Contest
Kirkwood High School (KHS) students in Advanced Placement Language and Composition Class and Journalism class submitted essays to the 19th Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest sponsored by the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum.
KHS students took the top three spots:
Cooper Menne (11th grade) won 1st Place for: Improving the World from Modern Hate
Kate Schreiber (12th grade) won 2nd Place for: Finding Meaning Would Change Our World
Grace Johnson (11th grade) won 3rd Place for: A Trail Blazed by Words, Treaded by Heroes
Students received $300, $200, and $100 respectively for placing in the writing category.
For the writing contest, students wrote a poem, newspaper article, story, play/dialogue, or essay. Entries were judged on content, originality, quality of expression, and accuracy. The contest theme this year is inspired by a powerful quote from Anne Frank, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Frank family going into hiding in the “Secret Annex” in Amsterdam.
The Advanced Placement Language and Composition Class is taught by Katie Meyers and the KHS journalism class is taught by Mitch Eden.
