College Kickstart Program at Kirkwood High School to Continue Serving Students Thanks to Kirkwood School District Foundation
Kirkwood School District Foundation (KSDF) awarded a $5,000 grant to the Kirkwood High School (KHS) College Kickstart Program. KSDF representatives surprised grant applicant, Melinda Hall (KHS Social Worker), and her colleagues with the award during National School Social Work Week. The College Kickstrart program at KHS assists graduates who might need assistance with essential supplies to start their first year in college.

Heroes Among Us…And a Whole Lot of Love
A Robinson Elementary School employee recently stepped up in a life-saving way. Bryan Freeman, head custodian at Robinson Elementary School in the Kirkwood School District, jumped into action after seeing a student in distress while eating lunch. Bryan saw the student chocking, rushed over, and immediately administered the Heimlich maneuver to help the student. After the item was dislodged, the school nurse came to the cafeteria and medically cleared the student..

Kirkwood High School Racquetball Team Wins National Championships for Second Year in a Row
Kirkwood High School (KHS) boy’s and girl’s racquetball teams were crowned the Overall Team National Champions at the USA Racquetball High School Championships held last weekend in Portland, Oregon. This is the second consecutive Overall Team title as KHS was National Champs in 2022 as well. The boy’s team placed second and the girl’s team placed first. This is the first title for the girl’s team in school history and the fifth overall team title for Kirkwood.

Kirkwood School District Students Compete in Gifted Resource Council’s Equations Contest
Kirkwood kids competed in the annual Gifted Resource Council’s Academic Challenge Cup, a series of friendly academic competitions in math and creative problem-solving for St. Louis area students in grades 2 – 8. This year’s event took place at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL).

Kirkwood High School Students Selected as Finalists in Regional St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Essay Contest
Kirkwood High School sophomores Jacob Poole and Graysen Sturdy were announced as top 50 “Prose Finalists” in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's Express the Music essay contest senior division. The contest collected some 585 submissions from 45 schools. Jacob Poole submitted his prose titled “The Journey to the Eternal Flower” and Graysen’s prose is titled “Well Played”.

Robinson Student Artwork Selected for Capitol
Students across the state submitted a work of art as part of the Missouri Art Education Association/Missouri Alliance for Arts Education (MAEA/MAAE) Missouri Senate Art Competition. Robinson 5th grader student Lillian Horrom’s artwork was selected to represent District 15 in the Capitol. Lillian is a student in April Maldonado’s art class.

Students from Kirkwood High School journalism program was one of 16 programs in the country announced by the Journalism Education Association, National Scholastic Press Association, and Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society as a First Amendment Press Freedom Award school for 2023. The KHS journalism program includes The Kirkwood Call, KHTV and Pioneer Yearbook.

Westchester Robotics Students Compete in State Tournament
Students from Westchester Elementary (WE) Robotics Teams competed in the VEX IQ State Robotics Tournament at Reeds Spring Middle School on Saturday, February 25. Two of the three teams finished in the top 12 and made the finals: the “GOATS” and team “Aliens”. Team Aliens also earned the “Judges Award” and Westchester’s all girl team called “Girl Powered” earned the “Sportsmanship Award.”

Kirkwood Arts Foundation Donates $1,500 to Kirkwood High School Music Program After Mel Bay Tribute Concert
Rrepresentatives from the Kirkwood Arts Foundation and Kirkwood Arts Commission presented a $1,500 donation to the Kirkwood High School music program. The funds were made possible thanks to proceeds from a special Mel Bay tribute concert at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center (KPAC) on December 1, 2022. At the concert, the Kirkwood High School Jazz Band opened for nationally known musicians Frank Vignole, Vinny Raniolo and Gary Mazzaroppi.

Nipher Student Artwork Selected as Winner in Annual Calendar Contest Promoting Healthy Living
Nipher Middle School student Lluvia Matlalcuatzi-Munoz was announced as a winner in the annual St. Louis County Department of Public Health (DPH) Healthy Living 2023 Calendar winner. Her design was one of 13 winners announced from the 254 creative poster submissions from students across the St. Louis area.

KSD Announces New Principal of Kirkwood High School
At the regularly scheduled Kirkwood School District Board of Education meeting on Monday, January 23, the board approved the recommendation for the hire of Dr. Seth Harrell as the new principal for Kirkwood High School effective July 1, 2023. at the start of the 2023-23 school year. Dr. Harrell will succeed Dr. Mike Havener, who will be retiring after serving the Kirkwood School District for the last 29 years.
