Welcome back parents/guardians and students of the Sophomore class of Kirkwood High School! Additionally, I would like to welcome you if you are a first time parent/guardian or student to KHS. We are excited to have you join us!

I hope you and your family have enjoyed the summer days and found time to relax and recharge before we start a new school year. It is amazing how time can go by so fast when you really want time to slow down. So, appreciate the summertime you have left and continue to do things that make you happy and fulfilled.

I am happy to share with you that our grade level guidance counselor, Mrs. Rachel Cosic, delivered a beautiful baby boy during the month of July. Therefore, she will not be with us at the start of the school year and she will be rejoining us in November. We will keep you updated on who will be filling in for her while she is gone. Until then, if you have any questions please feel free to email me or Abby Peterson (abby.peterson@kirkwoodschools.org), Guidance Counselor department chair, and one of the two of us will be able to assist you.

Last year since we were still adjusting to the effects of Covid - 19, as a school community we were not enforcing the KHS Attendance Policy as stated in our KHS Family Handbook, but the policy will be reinstated. I realize this does not mean much to you if you were a first time KHS family last year and therefore, this will be new information for you. You can review the KHS attendance policy in the family handbook found on our website. https://www.kirkwoodschools.org/domain/1661

The campus is very quiet on my end of the building during the summer so to find some student interaction opportunities I have to head to the athletic side of campus to see kids of all ages. I loved that I was able to see so many of you at the various camps, workouts, practices etc. during the summer months. My end of the building will not be quiet however, starting in August. Construction will be starting at KHS on the Dougherty Ferry end and will affect arrival, dismissal and how students navigate the north end of our campus. More information will be shared as we get closer to the start of school.

Next week there will be two Back to School Registration days (see schedule below) for students to come to KHS to take the necessary steps needed to be ready for the first day of school on Tuesday, August 23rd. If you were unable to come to KHS during one of our summer swap days to exchange your student computer, you will be able to do so during the Back to School days.

Please note, depending on how many students are needing to do the computer exchange at this time, you may experience longer wait times in order to complete this necessary step.

If you have any questions or need assistance throughout the year, please do not hesitate to call the tenth grade office and Ms. Paula Martin (administrative assistant) will be able to help you. I am excited to welcome everyone to KHS for the 2022-2023 school year and I look forward to working with the students and parents/guardians of the Class of 2025!
