A K-3 Literacy Plan was developed in Fall 2019, including a comprehensive framework and action steps to guide instruction and ensure all students are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade. This document serves as a companion piece to the new Missouri Literacy Plan (August 2019), developed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The Kirkwood plan also aligns with building-based literacy goals at each elementary school. A more comprehensive K-12 literacy plan will be shared with the Board of Education in April.
Kirkwood’s Literacy Plan is modeled after the Missouri Literacy Plan, organized around five key components:
- Leadership & Sustainability
- Standards-Based Curriculum
- Intentional Instruction, Intervention, & Enrichment
- Assessment
- Partnerships
