Boundary Adjustments
Monday, Oct. 30, 2023 Update:
Due to updated enrollment projections, we will no longer pursue efforts to adjust boundaries in our district for the foreseeable future.
Since conversations began years ago about adjusting boundaries, we have been committed to taking a data-driven approach. One of our primary goals with updating boundaries has been to alleviate current overcrowding. Over the past 10 years, total student enrollment in Kirkwood Schools has consistently increased and, most recently, the district has experienced modest growth. However, the Fall 2023 enrollment projections indicate an unexpected decline in enrollment due to lowering birth rates. As fewer students are born in the district, the number of students enrolling in Kirkwood schools is also predicted to decrease. With this new data, it appears we will achieve one of our main priorities of being close to 85% utilization in each elementary school with no boundary modifications by the 2028-29 school year.
Throughout this process, there were a number of other goals identified by the boundary adjustment committee. As we have gathered feedback on potential scenarios, additional priorities emerged. In the coming months, we will look to explore opportunities to address these priority areas.
We want to express our appreciation to our community for their engagement and thoughtful feedback throughout this process. We continue to be committed to transparency and communication. Additionally, we will remain focused on being responsive to updated data and information as it becomes available.
