Curriculum & Instruction

The Curriculum & Instruction Department coordinates all district activities related to teaching, learning, assessment and professional development.

In the Kirkwood School District, we define curriculum as the "what.”  Our curriculum outlines represent what we expect students to know and be able to do.

Instruction is the “how."  We support student learning and differentiate, based on student needs, in order for all students to meet and exceed expectations.

Assessment is the means by which we determine student mastery and proficiency on our defined expectations.  This information is shared with students and parents.  Teachers communicate information about classroom instruction, student needs and achievement through electronic tools and conversations. Assessment is frequent so students can demonstrate growing competencies. Ongoing assessment information is shared by sending home materials, offering electronic access, and conducting parent-teacher conferences. Proficiencies are reported quarterly on report cards.

A Vision for Teaching and Learning

Our Commitment to Equitable Student Success

At our core, we are dedicated to providing equitable opportunities and outcomes for each student. We believe in the power of collaboration and actively engage in professional learning communities to ensure that every student thrives.

Student Learning Experience

Our students are at the center of our mission, engaging in rigorous and relevant work that fosters problem-solving and the regular use of critical, analytical, and creative thinking skills. They connect, collaborate, and learn with others in meaningful ways, leveraging technology to access, advance, organize, and demonstrate their learning.

Our Educators

Our educators are highly prepared professionals committed to the success of all learners. They:

  • Demonstrate deep understandings of standards and curriculum.
  • Actively collaborate with colleagues around student data and learning.
  • Use high-impact, data-driven instructional strategies to advance teaching and learning, including the purposeful use of technology.
  • Share a steadfast commitment to the achievement and success of all students and a belief in our collective ability to make it happen.

Together, we create a supportive and dynamic learning environment where every student can succeed.
