Westchester 2nd Grader Inspires Visit from Soul on Fire Star John O’Leary

Westchester Elementary second graders in Ms. Abigail Catalana’s class were treated to a special visit from Soul on Fire star John O’Leary—thanks to a letter written by student Julia Fowler.

Julia had recently watched the movie with her family and learned that John had survived a childhood fire, which later resulted in the amputation of his fingers. In her letter, she bravely shared about her own congenital condition and how it has presented challenges for her.

John was moved by Julia’s note—and surprised her with an in-class visit at Westchester. He answered students’ questions, talked about his life, and reflected on what he and Julia have in common.

“I came here today to celebrate how great you are as a class, and to celebrate Julia,” John said. “Julia and I can do anything we want to do. Sometimes we need a little help from our friends, but we can do anything.”

John also spoke about the impact of heroes. While he had firefighters, doctors, and paramedics who saved his life, he said he’s experienced heroes throughout every stage of his journey.

“My story is both happy and sad. While it’s sad what happened to me, the friends I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had are happy. I’m married, I’m a dad, I can play the piano, I can throw a baseball. It might look a little different than the way other people do it, but I can do it. You never know how your story may inspire other people to reach their dreams, too.”

At the end of the visit, John presented the students with “Soul on Fire” movie posters, and a tshirt and hat to Julia.
