Tillman Elementary Celebrates Earth Day with a Focus on Reducing Waste

Tillman Elementary celebrated Earth Day with a schoolwide effort to reduce waste, beginning with an effort to go plastic-free during lunch and snack times.

To mark the occasion, Chartwells brought a food truck to campus, serving up cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, fries, fruit, and vegetables. Students and staff also received reusable utensil kits, courtesy of a grant from the Missouri Botanical Garden.

After enjoying their meals, students minimized waste by composting and recycling rather than sending items to the landfill—a practice Tillman embraces daily, but made sure to emphasize on Earth Day.

Other Earth Day fun included students planting flowers in the Tillman garden, writing Spring-themed acrostic poems, and participating in a fun “Plant a Tree” math activity.

Kindergartener Gretchen was excited about her utensil kit, saying, “I like (my utensil kit) because I can travel with them, and I’m really happy I get a pink set.” Fellow kindergartener Jackson agreed, “I’m happy to take them home and not have to throw them away. Especially since it’s Earth Day.”
