KSD VEX Robotics Recap
On Saturday, December 14, elementary students from Kirkwood School District competed in the Gateway Science Academy’s 4th Annual VEX IQ Robotics Tournament at the Gateway Science Academy of St. Louis. Teams from across Missouri gathered to compete for state qualification in an exciting day of robotics, collaboration, and sportsmanship.
Westchester Elementary sent six teams to the tournament, and several standout performances highlighted the event:
· The all-girl “Battle Bots” team placed 6th overall out of 38 teams in skills matches.
· The all-girl “Diamond Girls” team won The Design Award for their Robot, engineering notebook, and interview.
· The all-boy “The Champs” team placed 5th overall out of 38 matches.
· The all-boy “The Chimps” team placed 7th overall out of 38 skills matches.
· The all-boy “Crazy Crackers” team placed 3rd overall as TeamWork Champions.
The all-boy “Fighting Fire” team was celebrated by the judges as being one of the kindest teams at the event and demonstrated kindness and sportsmanship to other schools.
The Westchester Team is coached by Cindy Voller, Tanya Brown, Ben Merriman, Katelynn Hartman-Geier, and Jennifer Ono.
Keysor Elementary sent two teams to compete: The Great Glitches and Pizza IQ Remastered. Both teams each participated in eight alliance matches and three skills challenges. In their final match, the two Keysor teams combined efforts to score 20 points—a high score for the day—demonstrating strong collaboration and teamwork.
The Keysor teams are coached by Traci Jansen and Nathan Bauer.
The VEX IQ Robotics Tournament was an opportunity for all students to engage in hands-on learning, teamwork, and friendly competition. The event emphasized the importance of collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity. Above all, the students had fun while developing valuable skills in robotics and engineering.
