Kirkwood School District Board of Education Approves Hire of New Head Baseball Coach

At the regularly-scheduled Kirkwood School District Board of Education meeting on Monday, July 22, 2024, the Board of Education approved the recommendation of the appointment of Mr. Max Spitzmiller as the next boys head baseball coach at Kirkwood High School. Spitzmiller will succeed Coach Scott Weissman, who stepped down after more than 40 years of service in public education, both as a teacher and coach.

Coach Max Spitzmiler is a 2021 graduate from Northwest Missouri State where he earned a degree in Middle School Education; in 2023, he earned a master’s degree in Applied Health and Sports Science.  He was also a member of their baseball program for six years as a starting pitcher.  He is the all-time leader in innings pitched, second in career strikeouts, and holds the most complete games as a pitcher since 1982.  After graduating from Northwest Missouri State, Coach Spitzmiller served as an assistant coach at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, where he served as the programs pitching coach. During his time at Southwestern Community College, his pitching staff was able to have the second best Earned Run Average and the second most strikeouts in the past 10 years of the program.

“We are looking forward to having Coach Max Spitzmiller lead our baseball program into the future,” said Corey Nesslage, KHS athletic director. "To say that Max is excited about this opportunity is an understatement.  His passion and excitement to lead our program will be evident, especially to our student-athletes, this year and in the coming seasons.”
