Kirkwood High School Sophomore Gwendolyn Evans Honored with Prestigious Congressional Award Gold Certificate

Kirkwood High School (KHS) sophomore Gwendolyn Evans has earned The Congressional Award Gold Certificate. This award is one of the United States Congress’ highest honors for youth civilians and honors America’s youth for their initiative, service, and achievement.

To earn the Gold Certificate, Gwendolyn completed 90 hours of voluntary public service, 45 hours of personal development, and 45 hours of physical fitness in just six months. Her volunteer work included a full year of service at Open Door Animal Sanctuary, as well as over 50 hours with the KSD Adventure Club during the summer. She demonstrated personal growth by learning to drive and learning to play golf. She is now a member of the KHS Golf Team. Her physical fitness includes ballroom dancing as she trains at both Dance Art Studio and Just Dancing Studio. Recently, she competitively danced in an event in Kansas City and was awarded the top student in the 21 and below age division.

The Congressional Award program encourages young people to unleash their potential through self-directed goals in volunteerism, personal development, and fitness. Established by the United States Congress in 1979 as a bipartisan effort, the award is a private-public partnership funded entirely by the private sector and has been signed into law by every president since its inception.

Gwendolyn plans to continue her efforts over the next two years in hopes of achieving the prestigious Congressional Award Gold Medal, which is presented on the floor of the United States Congress.
