KHS Senior Wins Top Honors in International Photography Contest
KHS senior and Pioneer yearbook editor-in-chief Carter Schwent earned first place and an honorable mention in the international 2025 Jostens Photo Contest, drawing over 5,000 entries.
Carter’s photo titled “One Last Hug” won first place in the Graduation Category, which is judged on emotion, color, and vibrancy in capturing graduation day. With this win, Carter will receive a $500 cash prize. Judges praised the image for its emotional impact and storytelling, writing: “This image perfectly captures the celebratory emotions of the graduates as they say their goodbyes. Moving in close to the subject while including elements of the larger celebration ensures that the full story is depicted.”
His second photo, “Call of the Wild,” received honorable mention in the Sports Feature Photography category, which highlights high-quality, impactful sports imagery.
Both award-winning photos will be featured in the 2026 edition of the Jostens “Look Book,” a prestigious annual publication shared with school yearbook teams nationwide. Fewer than 5% of submitted yearbook content is selected for inclusion. The Look Book serves as a source of inspiration, showcasing exceptional storytelling and technical quality in the areas of emotion, action, color, and composition. Students and advisers use it to discover trends and improve future yearbook designs.
Pioneer Yearbook adviser Katie Meyers is beyond proud of Carter for these accomplishments. “This has been a big personal goal of Carter’s, and a dream come true,” said Meyers. “I couldn't be happier for him!”
After graduating from KHS, he plans to continue his education at the University of Denver, with aspirations to expand his photography experience. “I would love to connect with a sports team out in Denver and get the opportunity to take some photos of professional or collegiate sports teams,” said Carter.
