Virtual Education/MOCAP

Overview of Virtual Education in the Kirkwood School District

The Missouri Virtual Instruction Program (MOVIP) was established in 2007 as the state's online education option.  Senate Bill 603 (2018) and House Bill 1606 (2018) resulted in MOVIP's transition to the Missouri Course Access and Virtual Program (MOCAP), and brought new requirements for local school districts related to virtual education and access to these courses.  Kirkwood has made a number of changes to meet the needs of our students and comply with these laws.

Beginning in January 2019, any student in kindergarten through 12th grade enrolled in the Kirkwood School District who was also enrolled as a full-time student the previous semester can opt to take a course virtually through our District-preferred provider or through another MOCAP-approved vendor.  Students can take courses from any Internet-connected computer, available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. MOCAP's mission is to offer Missouri students equal access to a wide range of high quality courses, and interactive online learning that is neither time nor place dependent.  Local school districts and charter schools may use their own preferred online provider.

LAUNCH

The Kirkwood School District's preferred provider is Launch, a virtual course access program operated and overseen by Springfield Public Schools.  Launch courses are designed and taught by Missouri certificated teachers.  All courses are aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards, and semester courses at the high school level are NCAA and MSHSAA-approved.  A formal review process is built into all course development to ensure high quality and rigor.  Kirkwood has been a partner district with LAUNCH since 2017, and over 300 KSD students have taken courses through Launch each of the last two years.

Students at Kirkwood High School should contact Ms. Amber Kapral at amber.kapral@kirkwoodschools.org and/or your guidance counselor.  Some KHS classes are offered online via PeLA, the new Pioneer eLearning Academy

For additional information about taking courses through Launch or another MOCAP vendor, please contact Dr. Bryan Painter at bryan.painter@kirkwoodschools.org or 314-213-6104.  Please include "LAUNCH" in the subject line of any email.
