Standards Based Grading & Report Cards
Kirkwood School District embraces standards-based learning and grading PK-8. Standards-based grading is a way teachers assess and communicate how students are progressing in school. Instead of giving an overall grade like a “B,” teachers break down what students should know and do into specific learning goals. We refer to the learning goals on the report card as report card strands. If your student is learning math for example, there are specific things your child should understand, like counting, adding, and subtracting. Instead of getting a single math grade, which may leave families wondering where their student is succeeding or struggling, families can see how well students are doing on each specific skill they should learn. This helps teachers and families understand what students are doing well and where they may need extra help, making it easier to support each student’s individual learning journey. Below are commonly asked questions about the report cards.
