Math Placement (7th-8th Grade)
Math Placement Information
Kirkwood teachers review all curricular areas regularly to ensure instruction meets the needs of all students and is aligned with the Missouri Learning Standards. A review of middle school math courses began in the 2021-22 school year, resulting in two courses for eighth graders - Math 8 and Algebra I.
Math 8 is the next course in the middle school math progression. It is a rigorous course that builds a strong foundation for success in high school and beyond. The majority of our students take Math 8. We also know there are students who have a strong desire to take Algebra I in 8th grade.
There are three opportunities for students to demonstrate proficiency in Math 8 skills, which allow them to enroll in Algebra I for eighth grade. An overview of each opportunity is listed below.
Opportunity #1 to Demonstrate Proficiency in Math 8 Skills:
- The Initial Placement Assessment is taken during the week of February 16, 2026.
- Results and placement will be mailed home in February.
- Some students will demonstrate readiness for Algebra I. Others may choose to continue studying Math 8 skills or enroll in Math 8 for eighth grade.
Opportunity #2 to Demonstrate Proficiency in Math 8 Skills:
- The optional Retake Placement Assessment is taken during the week of April 13, 2026.
- Results and placement will be mailed home in April.
- Some students will demonstrate readiness for Algebra I. Others may choose to enroll in Math 8 over the summer or enroll in Math 8 for eighth grade.
Opportunity #3 to Demonstrate Proficiency in Math 8 Skills:
- Students who did not place into Algebra I via either placement assessment can take a virtual and asynchronous Math 8 course over the summer.
- Students will spend approximately 10 hours per week in June and July working on the Math 8 summer course.
- Successful completion of the Math 8 summer course allows students to enroll in Algebra I for their 8th grade year.
Several tools are available to help 7th graders prepare for the math placement assessment. Optional Math Labs are offered both during the school day and after school as a time for students to study with the support of a certified math teacher. Math Labs are designed to support student success. While teachers will provide the space, resources, and support, this is a chance for students to take ownership of their learning. Students who are passionate about taking Algebra I in 8th grade will need to dedicate time to prepare for the assessment.
In addition to the Math Labs opportunities, we are providing an IXL study tool and sample items. The sample items are not a comprehensive list of questions and skills to study, but more of a tool to help students understand the types of questions they will encounter on the placement assessment.
If you prefer that your student not take this assessment and be placed directly in Math 8 for next year, please complete the opt out form by Friday, February 13, 2026.
