Artificial Intelligence in KSD

In the Kirkwood School District, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined as any hardware or software that can adapt its output or performance by applying probabilistic algorithms to inputs. This definition covers any product or service that contains, uses, or is marketed as using AI. The district also specifically recognizes Generative AI, which is a type of AI designed to take input and generate new output that resembles human-made intellectual or creative work, such as art or writing (e.g., chatbots or large language models).

Board Policy EHBD is the foundational policy that governs all AI use by students and employees. This policy applies to the use of any district technology resources, including district-provided login credentials and free AI resources. It applies regardless of whether the AI use occurs on district property, at district-sponsored activities, or off campus, so long as a connection can be drawn to the educational environment.

While the Board Policy outlines the overarching governance, the KSD AI Use Plan is designed to support teaching and learning by promoting responsible and ethical AI use. The primary purpose of the AI Use Plan is to enhance educational opportunities and achievement for students while strictly protecting the safety, security, and privacy of students, staff, and district data. It provides a detailed, adaptable set of rules for acceptable AI use, ensures that educational content remains accurate and aligned with curriculum standards, and outlines specific prohibitions (such as forbidding the input of confidential data into unapproved AI platforms).

As part of the district's technological integration, staff utilize approved Google AI tools to streamline work and enhance learning. Both of these tools are accessible directly through the Google Workspace menu.

• Google Gemini: Gemini is utilized to help users create work products faster. It serves as a powerful assistant for search and validation, image generation, and improving the formatting and flow of written content.
• NotebookLM: This tool acts as a specialized, localized AI workspace. Users can upload their own specific materials (up to 50 sources per notebook) and use the AI to interact directly with those texts. NotebookLM can be used to synthesize information, develop study materials, or even generate audio and video overviews based solely on the provided source documents.
