The Kirkwood School District Wellness Plan calls for the selection and implementation of social-emotional learning curriculum at all grade levels. We have identified Second Step's SEL curriculum as a primary resource to support K-5 learners, with full-scale implementation by Fall 2020. Many classrooms may also be using these lessons throughout the 2019-20 school year. Second Step has received favorable reviews from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, & Emotional Learning (CASEL). Decisions about middle and high school SEL curriculum and resources will be made in the near future.
We realize "SEL" was not often formally taught when our parents were in school, yet the evidence is clear that our student benefit from this instruction now. The video below explains what social-emotional learning is. You can also view an overview of our K-5 scope and sequence in the window below.
