Course Description
Students taking the Woodworking & Carpentry course will study trees and how the properties of wood affect the design of a project. Students will design and construct several wood projects during the year, such as a picture frame, a secret box, a candle holder, a pen, a toolbox and more. A high emphasis is placed on safety around hand and power tools. Students will use a wide variety of hand and power tools to construct their projects, including a table saw, jointer, and routers. Students are expected to pay for the wood that they use to construct the projects that they will take home.

Course-Level Scope & Sequence (Units &/or Skills)
Unit Goal: Students will increase technical knowledge and learn skills to design and create wooden products. Students will:
- Add, subtract, and reduce fractions.
- Measure and record linear distances using a scale to a precision of 1/16 inch.
- Use a variety of measuring tools to identify square, parallel, and perpendicular parts.
- Sketch & dimensional multi-view drawings of simple geometric solids.
- Identify 5 different species of woods and their applications.
- Identify, machine, and assemble wood grains appropriately to create a structurally sound wood product.
- Students will utilize hand tools safely to construct a product.
- Using proper safety procedures for all woodworking machines.
- Build a product from a set of working drawings.
- Design a product from a set of working drawings.
- Turn a cylinder with coves and beads using a lathe, proper tools, and proper safety procedures.
- Face turn using a lathe, proper tools, and proper safety procedures.
- Students will use a variety of finishing processes to create a professional finished wood product.
- Students will be able to estimate the cost of a project within 10% of the actual cost.
