Community Invited to Special Dedication and Recognition Ceremony on March 13 at KHS Earl and Myrtle Walker Science Center
March 02, 2010
The Kirkwood School District and Kirkwood School District Foundation will host a special dedication and recognition ceremony in the Earl and Myrtle Walker Science Center at Kirkwood High School, 801 W. Essex Ave., on Saturday, March 13. Students, staff, parents and community members are invited to attend the ceremony, which will include a dedication of the newly named Bruce and Carolyn Woodruff Hall, the Glunt Hall and the Jim and Barb Byerly Hall. There will also be an acknowledgment of inaugural donors Earl and Myrtle Walker, the Bob and Lu Reim Foundation, and Blanton and Peg Whitmire. Light refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m. with a formal ceremony at 12:45 p.m.
The dedication precedes the Kirkwood School District's Science, Mathematics and Engineering Fair scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Walker Commons at Kirkwood High School. Projects from elementary, middle and high school students will be on display for everyone to enjoy.
Thanks to community support of Proposition I in April 2005, as well private donations for science and technology equipment through the KSD Foundation’s Pioneering the Advancement of Science Campaign, the new science center opened in August 2007. The science facility was designed to reflect current research and best practices in science education. The two-story structure measures 51,000 square feet and features 15 combined science classrooms/laboratories, five each for chemistry, biology and physics. Each classroom/laboratory averages about 1,500 square feet and is designed to facilitate the movement of students from discussion to hands-on activities.
