Where am I?

Principal's Message

Dr. Lisa Greenstein, Principal Mrs. Heidi Ford, Administrative Intern 314-213-6150

Dear Tillman Families,

Each week we share a quote with the school, and we talk about the significance of the quote as well as the author who created the quote. One of my personal favorites is: “People may not remember what you said, and they may not remember what you did, but they will remember how you made them feel.” by Maya Angelou.

February is always a month when we focus on compassion. Each day it is amazing to see the compassion that so many of our students and staff show toward one another. We witness many examples of compassion during our buddy activities, when older and younger students are working together and supporting each other. Recently, our students wrote messages on paper buckets to fellow students and to staff. Their goal was to “fill the buckets” of others by sharing kind thoughts and words. Having students come to my door and deliver buckets made my day!

Tillman is focused on helping others in the community and world by engaging in service learning projects. We are currently working on collecting shoes for the Shoeman Project. Our students have been learning about well water in Africa and how we can help to bring clean water to other parts of the world.

When we engage in service learning, we follow these steps which are taken from The Complete Guide to

Service 1.

Learning by Cathryn Berger Kaye.

Preparation
Students identify a real community need. They analyze information to create a plan for action.

Action
Students will carry out their plan of action, applying what they learned to benefit the community.

Reflection
Students take time to explore the impact of what they are learning and its effect on their thoughts and future actions.
Evaluation
Students reflect on the process of their service learning project and decide what was successful and what needs to be changed in future plans of action.
Demonstration/Celebration
Students exhibit their expertise through public presentations (displays, performances, class lessons, etc.)

As students engage in service learning projects at school and at home, it is our hope that they will transfer their learning to new situations in their communities. We look forward to watching our compassionate students find even more ways to show kindness to others.

In the best interest of our children, Lisa Greenstein

Kindergarten Registration 2012-13

If you have a child eligible for kindergarten next year, we would appreciate

receiving your completed registration forms by February 3. Our next year staffing is dependent upon the number of students that are enrolled. You can return the forms at the parent information meeting this evening, send them to school with a sibling or stop by the office during the school day.

We are also beginning the registration process for new students in grades 1-5. If you have friends or neighbors who will be new to Tillman in the fall, please encourage them to contact us. Thanks for your help in getting the word out.

HEART O GRAMS

Join in the Fun!! Fourth Grade will be selling Heart-O-Grams from February 7-13 before school in the front hallway. Heart-O-Grams are personalized messages to send to friends and staff at Tillman. Each heart-o-gram is 25 cents. All donations will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Please plan to buy some Heart-O-Grams and help out a GREAT charity!

Book Fair Luau! It is a Reading Celebration!

Thank you to the many families who attended Tillman's 2012 book fair. We are excited that our fair was a big success! We have packed up the fair but you still have a chance to purchase books for your child at our online book fair. If you were unable to make it in person but are still interested in making a purchase, IT'S NOT TOO LATE! Please consider Tillman's online book fair as an option. Each child made a wish list at school. We will be sending the unclaimed wish lists home with the kids today in case you want to purchase a book or two online that your child picked out. Your order will be shipped to Tillman and delivered to your child at school. It's very simple. If you are ordering a gift and prefer us to hold your order, we can do that too. Our online book fair is scheduled to end on Feb. 6. To access our fair, use the following link. http://www.scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs/2868263
