Freshman Football Picks Up Win
Quarterback Mike McHugh scored two rushing touchdowns, and running backs Henry Banks, Rashid Pullem, and wide receiver Justin Byrd each had a touchdown in the Pioneers 32-24 victory over Northwest on Thursday, October 9th. The Pioneers have won three consecutive games, and are 5-1 this season.
Varsity Golf Qualifies for State
Coach Kelly Nevins and the Pioneers placed third in this week’s District Tournament, and qualified three golfers for the Missouri State Tournament. Sarah Humphreys, Whitney Pennington and Samantha Sproull will travel to Bolivar, Missouri on Monday, October 20th for this year’s tournament, held at the Silo Ridge Golf & Country Club. The course is 18 holes, 5476 yards, with a par score of 72.
Varsity Field Hockey Falls in OT
The Pioneers opened the game’s scoring in the first half with a goal by Meredith Openlander. Sidney Simmons provided the assist, and Kirkwood led at halftime 1-0. However, Marquette scored in the second half to tie the game at 1-1, and send it into overtime. In overtime, Marquette’s Danielle Fuchs netted a goal to give the Mustangs the win 2-1.
Varsity Soccer at Lindbergh Broadcast
This Thursday, October 9th, the Pioneers match at rival Lindbergh High School will be available live online at www.Prepcasts.com. In fact, this Suburban West Conference matchup is this week’s MAC Soccer Game of the Week. The broadcast is free to listen, and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
Varsity Football at Northwest Broadcast
This Friday, October 10th, the Pioneers will travel to Northwest High School for a Suburban West Conference matchup against the Lions. The game will be carried live online at www.Prepcasts.com. The broadcast will begin at 7:00 pm, and the listening service is free.
DeAndre Buckner Named Player of the Game
Senior running back DeAndre Buckner was named the St. Louis Carpenters’ Union-www.Prepcasts.com Player of the Game for his outstanding performance during the September 26th Suburban West Conference game at Mehlville High School. Buckner carried the ball 25 times for 202 yards in the Pioneers 21-17 loss to the Panthers.
Varsity Soccer Beats Pattonville
The Pioneers improved their overall record to 9-4-1 with a 3-2 victory over Pattonville High School on Monday, October 6th. Andrew Bahn and Jordy McNamee scored first half goals for Kirkwood, and the Pioneers led at halftime 2-1. In the second half, Max McClure netted the eventual game winning goal. McClure, Tyler Conrad, and Brian Rosser each had one assist for the Pioneers.
JV Football Wins 5th Straight
On Monday, October 6th, the junior varsity football team defeated Oakville 26-6. Sophomore Dion Boykin scored two touchdowns, one on a punt return, and wide receiver Demetrius Terry scored on a pass from quarterback Sam Wright. The defense added a touchdown when linebacker Marcus Brownlee recovered a fumble and raced 40 yards to the end zone. With the win, the Pioneers are now 5-1. They will host Northwest High School next Monday, October 13th.
Alex Berry Named Post-Dispatch Athlete of the Week
Senior Alex Berry was named a St. Louis Post-Dispatch Athlete of the Week for the week of October 29th. A 5-foot-9 outside hitter, Berry was a key ingredient in the Pioneer’s first place finish in the McCluer North Tournament last weekend. In five matches, Berry totaled 55 kills and a .636 hitting average, as well as three aces, 15 service points, and seven digs.
Boys Swim & Dive Falls to Lafayette
The Pioneers (4-1) dropped their first dual meet of the season yesterday against Lafayette High School. Kirkwood had a strong start and actually surged to an eight point lead after diving. However, the superior depth of the Lancers proved too strong in the final stretch of events as they won comfortably 109-77.
JV Softball Picks Up Win
The JV Softball team picked up its first victory of the season last night, defeating Northwest 9-3. Pitcher Caroline Fleisher went the distance for the Pioneers, striking out eight hitters in seven innings of work. Mel Wilson smashed a triple and had two RBI’s. Tara Bruns added one RBI and made a spectacular catch in centerfield.
JV Football Beats Mehlville
The JV football team improved its record to 4-1 with a 24-7 victory over Mehlville on Monday, September 29th. Sophomore Dion Boykin scored two touchdowns, including returning the game’s opening kickoff. Sophomore Eric Worley added a field goal, and an impressive touchdown run late in the game by sophomore Zach Hawkins sealed the win for the Pioneers.
Boys Swim & Dive Beats Lindbergh
Kirkwood High School (4-0) swam past Suburban West Conference rival Lindbergh behind a slew of season best times and excellent individual efforts in some extremely close races.
JV Volleyball Places 2nd
Over the weekend, the girl’s JV volleyball team earned second place at the Fox Tournament. The Pioneers played five games on Saturday, beating U-City 2-0 (25-6, 25-13) splitting with Desoto (25-13, 23-25) and Fox 1-1 (26-27, 25-12), and defeating Webster 2-0 (25-8, 25-9). In the tournament championship, the Pioneers took game one of the best of three from Lindbergh 25-16, but fell to the Flyers in the final two (18-25, 23-25). KHS will return to action at home against Marquette on Tuesday, September 30th.
Tennis Wins Suburban West
The girl’s varsity tennis team finished first in this week’s Suburban West Conference Tournament, held at the Kirkwood Park Tennis Center. The Pioneers earned 13 points, followed by Clayton (9.5 points), Marquette (8.5 points), and Eureka (5 Points). Kirkwood will return to action at home against Oakville on September 29th.
Softball Beats Lindbergh
The varsity softball team picked up its second victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Lindbergh on Wednesday, September 24th. Megan Scott had two RBI, while Molly Mugge provided the third. Pitcher Katie Vannoy went the distance for the Pioneers, allowing only one run on five hits. The victory snapped the Pioneers 13-game losing streak. The team will return to action on Friday, September 26th, for a Suburban West Conference game at Oakville.
Golf 3rd at Kirkwood Quad
Kirkwood High School’s varsity girl’s golf team finished third out of four teams at the Kirkwood Quad on Wednesday, September 24th. The match was originally scheduled as a dual match between Kirkwood and Lafayette, but Parkway Central and Eureka were added to create the four team match held at Riverside Golf Course. Samantha Sproull and Whitney Pennington both shot personal bests of 47 and 42 respectively. Coach Kelly Nevins and the Pioneers will have one more dual match before competing in the Suburban West Conference Championship on Tuesday, September 30th.
Varsity Football at Mehlville Broadcasts
The varsity football team will travel to Mehlville High School on Friday, September 26th, to take on the Panthers in Suburban West Conference action. The Pioneers are 1-2 this season, and are looking to rebound from consecutive losses against Parkway South and Lafayette. For fans unable to attend, the game will be broadcast on the radio at KFNS 590 AM and online at www.prepcasts.com. Broadcasts will begin at 7:00 pm.
Boys Swim & Dive Earns Third Victory
Kirkwood High School easily defeated Mehlville on Tuesday afternoon, September 23rd. The Pioneers swept the top three spots in every swimming event, and the top two spots in the diving competition. The 400 Free relay team of Chris Diven, Billy Fries, Christian Stanza, and Jackson Furlong qualified for the state championships with a time of 3:32.63. With the effort, the Pioneers have now qualified for the state competition in all three relay events.
Golf Places 6th at Lindbergh Invitational
The girl’s varsity golf team placed 6th out of 13 teams in the Lindbergh Invitational Tournament on Tuesday, September 23rd. Whitney Pennington shot a personal best 90 and placed 5th in the tournament, while Sarah Humphreys shot a personal best 94 and placed 11th. The Pioneers are scheduled for dual meets against Lafayette High School on Wednesday, September 24th, and Northwest High School on Thursday, September 25th.
JV Field Hockey Beats Rosati
Goaltender Kaitlin Hartman earned her third consecutive shutout, while Kaitlyn Mahoney and Jenny Pierce provided the offensive firepower in the Pioneers 2-0 win against Rosati-Kain last Saturday. Lauren Wendell added two assists, as the JV field hockey improved its overall record to 4-2. The team will be back in action this Friday, September 26th at Cor Jesu.
Boys Swim & Dive Wins Easily Over Oakville
KHS moved to 2-0 on the season with a victory against Oakville High School Friday afternoon. The Pioneers easily controlled the meet on the strength of superior depth and solid relay swimming efforts. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Jackson Furlong, Mitchell Bequette, Christian Stanza, and Chris Diven qualified for the state championship meet in a time of 1:35.83. In addition, the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relay events resulted in 1-2 finishes for the Pioneers.
Boys Swim & Dive Tops Parkway South
Kirkwood High School opened the 2008 dual meet schedule with a victory over conference rival Parkway South on Tuesday, September 16th. Senior Chris Diven won two events (200 Free, 100 Free) with state qualifying times to lead the Pioneer scoring attack. Seniors Chris Kelly (Diving) and Christian Stanza (100 Breast) also managed to punch their tickets to the state championship with their individual wins. Other Pioneer individual winners included Jackson Furlong (50 Free) and Billy Fries (500 Free).
Volleyball Places 3rd
The varsity girl’s volleyball team went 3-2 last Saturday, and earned third place in the St. Charles West Tournament. The Pioneers lost their first round match to St. Charles West 2-0, but rebounded to defeat Holt 2-0, and St. Dominic 2-0. In the tournament semifinals, Lafayette beat Kirkwood 2-0, but the Pioneers rallied to win the third place game against Howell Central 2-0. With three wins in the tournament, head coach Julie Goodmann and the Pioneers improved their overall record to 5-3. The girls will travel to Arnold, Missouri on September 16th for a Suburban West Conference match against the Fox Warriors.
Football Pioneers Ranked 4th
The Pioneer varsity football team, coached by Larry Frost, is ranked fourth in this week’s HSGameTime Football Power Rankings. The rankings are created by News Channel 4 sports writer Tim Klutsarits, and are updated weekly. This week’s top ten includes: 1. East St. Louis (1-1) 2. Fort Zumwalt West (2-0) 3. Hazelwood East (2-0) 4. Kirkwood (1-0) 5. Eureka (2-0) 6. MICDS (2-0) 7. SLUH (2-0) 8. Timberland (2-0) 9. DeSmet (1-1) 10. Maplewood (2-0).
Pioneer Football Live on TEAM 1380 AM
This Friday, September 12th, TEAM 1380 AM will be broadcasting live from Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field for the first home varsity football game against Parkway South High School. The Pioneers are 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Suburban West Conference after defeating Marquette High School 38-22 last Saturday. The broadcast will begin at 7:00 pm and is available on your AM dial at 1380, and online at www.team1380.net. TEAM 1380 AM will broadcast all varsity football home games this season.
MIZZOU Features McWoods
Kirkwood High School’s girl’s track & field head coach Roberta McWoods was featured in the fall 2008 issue of the University of Missouri-Columbia alumni magazine. The article details McWoods’ teaching experience and her desire to teach and coach young student athletes in the Kirkwood community. A St. Louis native, McWoods graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1985 with a bachelor’s of science in education. She also ran track at Mizzou. This season marks McWoods’ 24th as KHS’ girl’s track & field head coach.
