Believing is Seeing Tutoring

The Believing is Seeing Tutoring program was started in 2006-2007 by Robinson teacher Diane Moffitt.  Our mission is to provide academic assistance, build community relationships and provide mentoring opportunities in the Kirkwood community of Meacham Park.

Now in our 6th year, we provide services for over 55 children in grades 1 - 5, assisted by 5 Kirkwood facilitators and a dedicated group of high school and adult volunteers.  The Kirkwood School District has provided tables, chairs, cabinets and materials for our students as well as our location.  The tutoring site is in the Oliver J. Lemmie Educational Building, of the First Baptist Church, located at 304 Milwaukee Avenue.

Our tutoring materials are based and developed on school assessments that tell us what our individual students need to work on in reading and math.  Our snacks, as well as many of our wonderful adult tutors, have come from the Kirkwood Baptist Church on Woodlawn Avenue.  We now coordinate at least 60 high school tutors and 20 adult volunteers on a yearly basis, meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Robinson Elementary and on Wednesdays for North Glendale Elementary.

If you would like to be a part of this rewarding and positive experience, pease contact either Diane Moffitt, Robinson Elementary, at diane.moffitt@kirkwoodschools.org or Barbara Swalina, North Glendale Elementary, at barbara.swalina@kirkwoodschools.org.
