Kirkwood Community Mentors

Where am I?

The objectives of the Community Mentor Program are to:

  1. Increase the student's academic performance;
  2. Increase the self-confidence of the student;
  3. Develop a respect for the value of education;
  4. Break down stereotypes and strengthen ties between generations;
  5. Contribute to a renewed sense of community.

Community mentors will be assigned to work with students on a 1-1 basis who have been identified by school personnel as benefiting from the individual attention provided by a mentor. Students participating in this program range from age 3 through high school. Each school will notify parents (or guardians) of students participation in the mentoring program.

Mentors may work with students for one hour per week throughout the school year. All mentoring will occur at the school site and will be scheduled for a time that is convenient for both the mentor and the student.

Orientation sessions will be provided for all mentors. The mentoring program is open to everyone, regardless of age, gender or race. Prior to the first mentoring session, the mentor will meet with the student's teacher or counselor. Pertinent information about the students (interests, skill levels, etc.) will be shared at that time.

Adults interested in serving as a mentor to a student should contact Nelson Taylor at 314-213-6100 ext 8043 for additional information.
