Three Kirkwood Schools Present "Big Check" to American Red Cross for Haiti Relief
February 05, 2010

Three Kirkwood School District schools—North Kirkwood Middle School, Keysor Elementary School and Robinson Elementary School—conducted coin drives to raise funds for the American Red Cross in support of Haiti relief efforts. On Friday, Feb. 5, students representing all three schools, along with their principals and teachers, presented a “big check” totaling $8,751.56 to Deane Adam, director of youth services for the American Red Cross, during a special presentation at North Kirkwood Middle School. The students representing Keysor included Reise Wedeking, grade 5; Jack McCoy, grade 4; Spencer Weber, grade 5; and Anthony Tillman, grade 3. The Robinson students included fourth-graders Adeline Godsy, Timothy Knight and Laniya Frenchie. NKMS students included Bailey McCoy, grade 7; Emma Giesler, grade 6; and Markeyse Hamilton, grade 7.
Details about the individual school projects are listed below.
North Kirkwood Middle School Total: $4,441.56
From Jan. 22-25, seventh-grade students coordinated a coin drive to support Haiti under the direction of language arts/reading teacher Maria Stobbe, who is also the district’s service-learning coordinator.
As part of their service-learning project, the seventh-graders learned about the history and culture of Haiti from flipcharts created by Amy Stephens, the district’s English as a second language teacher. Stobbe, who has been to Haiti, and her sister, Lora Ianotti, who was in Haiti when the earthquake struck, also shared information about the country with students. Students collected donations daily from each classroom in the morning and during lunch. The students also helped count the money.
Keysor Elementary School Total: $3,500
The Keysor “Pennies for People” project (cash donations) was coordinated by the school’s Civil Right Team with guidance from teachers Robyn Hoffmann and Jennifer McCoy. All classrooms collected change in gallon water jugs, essentially displacing the water in jugs as kids add money. The initial connection for students was the severe water shortage in Haiti. Students created and made announcements during the school’ morning video announcements. The school’s goal was to raise $100 per 21 classrooms: they succeeded their goal for a total of $3,500.
Robinson Elementary School Total as of Feb. 4: $810 (with additional funds to be sent after the drive ends on Feb. 10)
The fourth-grade REACH (gifted education) students, under the direction of teacher Steven Pursley, is coordinating the school’s drive to raise funds for Haiti. The group encouraged all Robinson students to do chores at home to make money for this important cause. All classrooms received a short flip chart with information on Haiti and earthquakes on Jan.19. As part of the school’s character education focus of “filling your bucket,” buckets were available in classrooms for the collection of funds. The fourth graders made flyers, created posters wrote announcements for the school’s video announcements as well as a short play to promote the project. As of Feb. 4, Robinson students had raised $810 and expect to send more to the Red Cross after their drive ends on Feb. 10.
