Clubs & Activities

NKMS offers many different clubs and activities Tuesday - Thursday from 3:00 to 3:50.  Bus transportation home is provided to Kirkwood and city students who ride the bus.  Students must obtain an activity pass from one of their teachers if they plan to stay for an after school activity.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES OFFERED:

Art Club - Sponsored by Mrs. Mincks
Art club meets bi-weekly and is limited to 25 students. Sign up sheets are posted outside the art room on the Wednesday before the club meets.

Boys Bunch - Sponsored by Mrs. Owens
It is for boys in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. The focus of the group is to get together to talk about school or social issues. We also enjoy playing board games or Legos.

Chess Club - Sponsored by Mr. Rockette
We play chess every Tuesday in the school library.

Computer Lab - Sponsored by Mrs. Schwalbert and Mr. Storey
Computer lab meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week in lab 12. Students are encouraged to attend computer lab to work independently if they are behind in class work or need to use the internet for research.

Club 44 - Sponsored by Ms. Erby and Mr. Gilbert
The organization has been in the Kirkwood Community for more than twenty years, founded by Joe Cole. The concept in working with the youth is to promote and foster social/emotional growth and responsibility to ones self as well as to society. Our sponsors serve as mentors and conflict mediators to Club 44 members while they are students here at NKMS. Activities include modern etiquette, planning and presenting a family Winter Celebration, YMCA lock-ins, and finally a Spring Break travel experience. This year's destination TBA.

Earth 3.0 Club - Sponsored by Mr. Crook

This is an opportunity for students to get together to plan and participate in environmental service projects.

Jazz Band - Sponsored by Mrs. Wiley
The North Kirkwood Middle School Jazz band is an auditioned group. We meet weekly and prepare music for 3 performances throughout the school year.

Lifestyle Club - Sponsored by Mrs. Drewel-Lynch
All 6th, 7th and 8th grade ladies are welcome. Club meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in the Health room. Ladies will be enriching their physical, emotional and mental character development.

Math Lab - Sponsored by the Math Department
Math lab is a place for students to get assistance with the math they are learning in class. A math teacher staffs math lab and is available to answer questions regarding homework and retake work. It is also a place to retake math tests.

NKMS Choirs - Sponsored by Mrs. Luciano

North Star Singers and Norhern Lights Show Choir are by audition only. Auditions take place in the spring for the following school year. 6th Grade Choir is open to 6th graders and all are welcome!

NKMS School Newspaper - Sponsored by Mrs. Siegel
The NKMS school newspaper will be published 6 times during the school year. During meeting time, students will develop ideas, write and edit stories and layout the newspaper. We will meet every Tuesday in room 9.

Renaissance - Sponsored by Mrs. Owens, Mrs. Fink, and Mr. Good

Renaissance is a student organization that is open to ALL students! In fact, it is our goal that EVERY student at NKMS participate in a Renaissance sponsored activity at some point during the school year. We walk in the Greentree Parade, recognize students for positive contributions to our school community, and plan fun events to promote school spirit. Our theme is "Making our school a better place, it's who we are...it's what we do!" As your schedule allows, please join us in the Counseling Center after school on Thursdays!

Running Club - Sponsored by Mrs. Baldwin
We will run on the turkey trot course to get ready for the big Turkey Trot race in November. Race is set for November 4, 2009.

SistaGirls Club - Sponsored by Ms. Massenburg
The mission of The SistaGirls Club is to celebrate the unique qualities of girls by providing opportunities for them to discover, to demonstrate and to develop self-awareness, self-respect, and self-acceptance in an effort to enhance their capacity to fully embrace themselves and others.

UNITE Club - Sponsored by Mrs. Stobbe and Ms. Wise
UNITE is a club that will focus on social justice issues. The goal is to develop students who are knowledgeable of global concerns and problem solving opportunities around which they can offer solutions and make meaningful contributions to their world. UNITE Club is held on the last Wednesday of the month in room 30.

Writing Lab - Sponsored by the Communication Arts Department
Writing Lab is a place for students to get assistance with the communication arts they are learning in class. A communication arts teacher staffs writing lab and is available to answer questions regarding homework and retake work. It is also a place to retake communication arts tests. Writing lab is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in lab 10.
