Homework Policy

At North Kirkwood Middle School homework assignments are an important part of a student's educational development. The purpose of assignments includes: extending the practice of skills, reviewing material, extending the classroom learning, or completing a project. Students should understand and be able to explain the purpose for the assigned homework.

Homework assignments are treated in a variety of ways:

  1. Homework may be given for credit
  2. Homework may be checked for quality
  3. Homework may be used for making decisions in grading
  4. Homework may be used to determine the degree of understanding of skills and concepts
  5. Homework may be given to prepare the students for the next class discussion

Assignments should:

  1. Be related to outcomes which are necessary for the students
  2. Yield maximum benefit for the student while minimizing excessive demands on student and teacher time
  3. Be clearly and thoroughly described
  4. Call for tasks which extend the learning occurring in the class
  5. Be coordinated within teams concerning the amount given

A reasonable expectation of time for homework assignments at the middle level is one to one and a half (1–1/2) hours per day. Parents can help by providing an adequate place to study and by assisting with the monitoring of assignment completion and quality control.
