History

SCHOOL HISTORY

North Kirkwood Middle School was built in 1957 as a junior high school for students in Grades 7, 8 and 9. In 1976, the district began a reorganization of school grade levels and the junior high school became a middle school for Grades 6 through 8 with Grade 9 students moving to Kirkwood High School.

As a result of a tax/bond issue in 1993, a building addition connecting the east and west buildings was completed in 1995 to house the new library/media center, seven regular and three computer classrooms. A landscaped entry plaza was created at the south front. In 2005, the community approved Proposition I, a two-part bond initiative that provided funds for improvements and infrastructure repairs throughout the district as well as funds to complete the district’s master facilities plan. Prop I improvements at NKMS include new water/fire main, new fire alarm system, exterior door replacements, new roof over band room, electrical panel replacements in gym and shop areas, and floor restoration in north gym.

NKMS was named to the state’s “Top Ten List” for high performance on the spring 2006 MAP tests in seventh-grade communication arts. The middle school also received the 2007 Champion for Character Award, sponsored by Cardinals Care and CharacterPlus, for effectively integrating service learning throughout the school.
