Volunteering

A strong connection between parent and family involvement in schools is key in ensuring a student's academic achievement, attendance, attitude, and success in continued education.

At Nipher Middle School there are many opportunities available for parents who would like to get involved. Please call the school office to find out more.

Volunteer Opportunities During 2007-08 School Year

School Year Events

  • Innisbrook Fundraiser (Chairs: Beth McNamara, bethmcnamara@hotmail.com; Sarah Grus, sgus@sbcglobal.net Help, plan, tally or distribute orders for this major PTO fundraiser. Last year we earned nearly $23,000. Kick-off Aug. 30
  • Greentree Festival's Famous Nipher French Fry Booth (Chairs: Klaus & Martha Banks, martha_bank@yahoo.com /klausbank@kw.com Many volunteers needed to work two-hour shifts at Nipher's popular "low-cal" fry booth. Wash potatoes the week of, cook or sell these delectable, homemade fries. Dates: Sept. 14-16
  • Book Fair (Chair: Michelle Huber, usblues@swbell.net) This committee works with the Nipher Librarian to plan the Book Fair. Dates: Oct. 22-24
  • Staff Appreciation (Chairs: Shana Warner, warbro1@aol.com or Dee Dee Kebler, rskdrk1985@sbcglobal.net) Plan treats and other activities for teachers and staff to show parent appreciation. The three main events include: Staff Breakfast: Aug. 17; Conference Dinners: Oct. 24 and Feb. 7
  • Turkey Trot (Contact: Ed Bielik, bielike@gw.kirkwood.k12.mo.us) An annual Nipher tradition that celebrates fitness. Volunteers will work approximately two hours the morning of Nov. 20.
  • Winter Mixer (Chairs: Jenell Welsh, sjwelsh1@sbcglobal.net; Julie Dobbs, julie.dobbs@charter.net) Parents needed to chaperone mixer held from 2:15 - 4 p.m. on Nov. 29.
  • AIM (Association for Instrumental Music) (Chair: Debbie Kuper, dskuper@charter.net) AIM provides and serves refreshments at Nipher music performances (Band: Dec. 5 and May 14; Orchestra/Vocal: Dec. 12 and May 7).
  • Nipher Hospitality (Chairs: Sue Shipman, sueshipman@charter.net; Lisa Hauck, lisahauck@charter.net) Plan and serve refreshments at 3 designated PTO events: 6th grade BBQ (Aug. 20); Father/Grandfather Breakfast (Jan. 23) and Gold N Ceremony (April 30).
  • Nipher Mania -- A Night of LIVE Art & Trivia (Chairs: Mary McHugh, marymchugh1@mac.com; Diana Gray, graysmatter@sbc.global.net) A revamped trivia blast that will involve live painting, sculpting, interesting taste-testing and yes, a COUPLE of rounds of funky, interactive trivia. Help plan, setup, or participate. Event is Fri., Feb. 1 at the Kirkwood Community Center.
  • Spring Mixer (Chairs: Julie Beattie, juliebeattie@sbcglobal.net; Susie Bunch, bunchs@sbcglobal.net) Parents needed to chaperone dance from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 4.
  • 8th Grade Dance (Chair: Renee Gamble, rg_interiors@yahoo.com) Parents needed to chaperone the 8th Grade dance from 7 - 9 p.m. on May 16.
  • 8th Grade Celebration (Chair: Leah Ann Fleisher, dfleis8211@aol.com) Help plan or staff event set for May 27.

Other General Volunteer Opportunities

  • Beautification (Chair: Fran Waldemer, franwaldemer@charter.net) Help plan and implement interior and exterior projects; work with classrooms on outdoor projects; landscape maintenance includes weeding, water, planting, and more. This is a "work as needed" position that helps Nipher look beautiful.

  • GENERAL VOLUNTEER POOL (Contact: Ellen Summa, elysell@earthlink.net) Unsure about what to sign up for? We will call you if we need parents to temporarily help us with events or projects. If you are available, you can help then on an as needed basis.
