A student group for anyone interested in exploring the field of astronomy. We meet (almost) every Thursday at contact in SC202. Our primary activities involve star gazing, hosting star parties for elementary and middle school students, and visiting local science facilities.

Band

Band consists of four main groups. Marching Band plays, marches, and enhances school spirit at football games. Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band provide musical entertainment for Kirkwood students and the community.

Black Achievement and Cultural Club (BACC)

Black Achievement and Cultural Club gives both black and white students the chance to learn more about black culture and the role of black people in society. In addition to raising money to aid charities, the club actively participates in the festivities of Martin Luther King Day and Black History Month.

BJC Hospice

Teen Volunteers assist the BJC Hospice program by visiting families dealing with a terminal illness, offering fun play opportunities for the children (games, trips to the park, zoo, movies), and providing respite for the parents. The teen volunteers make contact with their assigned families at least once every two weeks, usually on the weekends.

Cheerleader squads are open to both male and female students. Tryouts are held in the spring for students who will be in grades 9 through 12 the following year.

Chem Club is available for chemistry students interested in pursuing more specialized topics and presenting chemistry presentations in the community.

Class Officers

Class Officers promote class unity in addition to their fund raising activities. It is the responsibility of class officers to plan activities in which everyone may participate. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior class officers are elected at the end of the school year. Freshman officers are elected at the beginning of the school year. Please see your grade level office for application and elections. Check under your class on this page for your sponsors.

FBLA-PBL is the largest business career student organization in the world. The high school division has 215,000 members.

FBLA GOALS: Develop competent, aggressive business leadership. Strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work. Create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise. Encourage members in the development of individual projects that contribute to the improvement of home, business, and community. Develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism. Encourage and practice efficient money management. Encourage scholarship and promote school loyalty. Assist students in the establishment of occupational goals. Facilitate the transition from school to work.

Gateway Book Club

GBC meets monthly to discuss Gateway Readers Award Nominees. Members share great books, and much on snacks.  Students vote for their favorite titles during a pizza party in February. Open to everyone.

Gay and Straight Alliance Club (GSA) gives students the opportunity to meet and discuss issues related to sexual orientation. The club provides educational workshops for both faculty and students and organizes social activities that will build tolerance and understanding in the community.

Mock Trial Team is an organization that competes in mock criminal trials. Students have the ability to act out a witness role and debate as an attorney.

My Brothers Keeper

"My Brothers Keeper" was formed to empower high school male students both academically and socially. Facilitated through academic monitoring, peer mentoring, mentoring by male role models and motivational speakers, in addition to the student's academic responsibilities, they also have to participate in service learning and community service projects! To become a member they'd just need the desire to be an outstanding student!

National Honor Society

National Honor Society allows Seniors and Juniors with a minimum 3.3 GPA to be eligible for membership. Students are then selected on service, leadership, and character. Chapter activities include school and community service projects.

Orchestra

Orchestra is a year-long class and performing club as well. Members of the group play several concerts during the year. Also, the Orchestra takes a trip to a major U.S. city once every two or three years for the purpose of learning more about music.

Peer Helpers

Students provide mentoring for students needing social and emotional support across the district, K-12. The Peer Helpers become a "buddy" to their "mentee," which fosters a relationship of mutual growth and development. Peer Helpers visit their buddies on average of one time per week for approximately 30-45 minutes.

Pep Club

Kirkwood Pep Club is the school's largest organization and promotes the traditions of KHS while encouraging school spirit. The Pep Club backs all athletics through decorations, pep assemblies, cheering at games, and hard but fun work. The dedication and spirit of the Pep Club is noticeable during the Turkey Day season when the students sponsor games and contests, coordinate the hall decorations, provide a breakfast for the sports' teams, and finish with a pep rally the day before the "big game."

Social Justice/Character Council

Students meet to discuss issues surrounding social justice and upright character, such as tolerance, equality and diversity. Students work to put on the annual Social Justice Festival, a variety act at the Station Plaza in downtown Kirkwood, celebrating the themes of social justice with music, dance, poetry, juggling, and community spirit.

Students Against Driving Drunk/S.A.D.D. promotes safety among drivers. The club organizes one assembly each year to remind students of the hazards of driving drunk. Student Council is the representative governmental body of the students and is a vital part of high school. The purpose of the Student Council (SC) is to promote the general welfare of the school by acting as a liaison between students and the administrators and to insure that students play an active part in the making of policy. It has the power to pass resolutions and other legislation dealing with issues of significance to students and submit such legislation to the administration for approval. Clubs and classes choose their representatives for council after elections in the fall. Anyone is allowed to attend and all are encouraged to express themselves. If you wish to make a presentation to council, however, please attend the Executive Board meeting so your issue can be put on the agenda.

Youth in Government

Youth in Government is a club where high school students learn how the government works by acting out the roles of the legislators, lawyers, justices, and lobbyists. Students become more aware of the issues that most influence high school students. Every spring Y.I.G. members from all over Missouri come together for a conference in Jefferson City and present bills and cases as real legislators, lawyers, or lobbyist would. The three day weekend provides an exciting culmination to the Y.I.G. experience.
