PSAT/NMSQT
Where am I?
WHAT IS THE PSAT/NMSQT?
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is the qualifying test juniors must take to enter nationwide scholarship competitions conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (taking the test as a sophomore was just for practice!).
It is the qualifying test for the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding African American Students
It is a good (and reasonably priced) means of “practicing” for the SAT
WHEN IS THE TEST?
Wednesday, October 12thth, at Kirkwood High School. The test will begin at 7:50 a.m (your room assignment will be posted outside the Guidance Office); bring your school I.D. or driver’s license, two (2) #2 pencils, and your social security number if you have one. Although no question will require a calculator to find the answer, it is strongly recommended that you bring a calculator (four-function, scientific, or graphing) with you when you take the test. Calculators will not be provided.
IS IT REQUIRED BY THE KIRKWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT?
No, because a fee is charged.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
$18.00 (plus $5.00 late fee – after Oct. 2nd)
WHEN AND HOW DO I REGISTER?
Juniors register September 19-October 6 (Monday-Friday) in the Registrar’s Office
A check (preferred) or money order, payable to Kirkwood High School, or cash must be presented at the time of registration. You must also present an ID when registering.
WHAT IF MY GRADES ARE AVERAGE, AND I WOULD NOT SEEM TO QUALIFY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS; SHOULD I TAKE THE TEST?
High grades and high scores on standardized tests do not always go together; neither do average grades and average test scores always go together.
Again, this is a relatively inexpensive way of practicing for (and predicting a score for) the SAT which many students take at the end of the junior year or during the senior year. If you are still unsure, check with your counselor.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
An information booklet/practice test is given to each student who registers. There will be an English study session during homeroom on Sept. 28 and a Math study session during homeroom on Oct. 5.
Students who are eligible for special accommodations MUST see Ms. Lutz
.
