Mr. Gavin's Fall 2011 letter to the class of 2013:
July 13, 2011Dear Class of 2013,
Happy July! I hope each of you is enjoying the summer with its warmth, slow sunsets, lively concerts and family vacations. Take the time afforded you during this season to live in the moment and soak up the beauty of your friends, family and self. Breaking from the routines of the school year offers you the opportunity to relax, regroup and ready yourself for the coming year. During a trip I took last month to New York, I did the unthinkable and unplugged from my Twitter and web for an entire week. While this action initially caused me anxiety, I was struck by how freeing it was to focus on the people, places and experiences before me. Try it for just a day and see how it impacts you.
While laying by the pool, sweating at an athletic camp, reading a book or listening to your favorite artist reflect upon the first half of your high school career. What can you celebrate? What do you still want to accomplish? Where can you grow? What curiosities do you want to pursue further? Kirkwood High School’s culture fosters an environment where learners discover and nurture their passions. Think about where you are on your academic, social, and athletic development and use this awareness to plot a course for where you want to be at the end of this year and when you walk across the stage at Chaifetz in May of 2013. Your parents, friends, teachers and coaches are here to help you.
As the Class of 2013 begins its Junior year, you assume a new role at KHS; that of upperclassmen. Freshmen and sophomores will look up to you as role models in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, on athletic fields, and on stage. Take your leadership role seriously. Be positive leaders in our school and let your words and actions show that we are the BEST class at Kirkwood! Good leaders take measured, positive risks that improve themselves and their community. Think about what risks you will take in coming years to improve yourself and your school.
A few reminders: The first day of school is August 17th. Juniors park on the Essex lot and parking stickers can be purchased from Mrs. Layman. Our office is now in the North hallway. Mrs. Layman is still your secretary at the same number 213-6115. Ms. O’Neill and Ms. Frese are our class sponsors.
I am looking forward to seeing each of you in the coming weeks.
This will be a great year!
Mike Gavin
