Where am I?
Notification from KSD Student Services
May 01, 2009
Due to the evolving situation of 2009 H1N1 flu virus (formerly known as the swine flu) spreading in parts of the United States, we want to share some information and ask for your help in monitoring any illnesses in our schools.
The symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of regular seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
If your child is ill with these symptoms, please keep him/her at home and let your school's office know that your child has flu-like symptoms when calling in sick. Our nurses will be closely monitoring the situation to track illnesses and take any action that may be necessary to control communicability. We further suggest that you contact your health care provider to discuss possible testing or treatment. There are some medications that can be prescribed, however they need to be initiated within the first few days of the onset of symptoms.
There are several everyday things people can do to stay healthy:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is believed to spread among humans through coughing or sneezing of infected people. If you get sick, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
For further information, please go to www.cdc.gov or visit www.dhss.mo.gov for information from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Providing a safe learning environment is always our first priority, please be assured we will continue to pass along any information we receive.
