March 11, 2010

Eleven Kirkwood High School students took part in the “Polar Plunge” at Creve Coeur Lake and helped raise more than $30,000 for Special Olympics. Nearly 300 students from area schools participated in the event on Feb. 27 to benefit Special School District student athletes who participate in Special Olympics Missouri. The KHS plungers, who jumped in the lake dressed as Kirkwood super heroes, included David (Chubbs) Stillman, Katie Cox, Maddie Lovell, Christina Salmo, Caroline Skelton, Pete Krusing, Margaret Gender, Chelsea Watkins, Kate Hunt, Ryan Schuessler and Danielle Harper. Mike Phillips, a student at St. Louis University High School also participated with the KHS group.

The KHS Student Council and National Honor Society served as the joint sponsors of the KHS Polar Plunge by recruiting participants and donors for the event. As a result of their efforts, KHS students donated $868 to benefit the Special Olympics Missouri.

Polar Plunge is a Law Enforcement Torch Run project that is planned by Special Olympics Missouri in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies. Special Olympics Missouri is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental disabilities. More than 15,000 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports throughout the state. For more information about the Polar Plunge and Special Olympics Missouri, visit www.somo.org/plunge.
