Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field
Where am I?
Home of Kirkwood High School’s football and track & field teams, Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field was created as a multi-use facility for the purpose of supporting educational and athletic needs of KHS students.
This facility is named after Ernest L. Lyons, legendary football coach and physical education teacher at Kirkwood High School. Lyons served as KHS’ varsity football head coach from 1928 to 1948. The field was originally named KHS Athletic Field, and was renamed Ernest L. Lyons Memorial Field in 1957.
Lyons Memorial Field features bleacher seating for 2,662 fans on the east and west sides of the stadium, with additional seating on grass hills surrounding the field. An eight lane synthetic all-weather track encloses the field’s all-natural grass playing surface. Lyons Field has one sand pit for long and triple jump, and a high jump and pole vault area. Other features include lights, an electronic scoreboard, a concession stand, and an equipment storage facility.
The site has gone through multiple improvement projects since its completion, including:
1993 – Drainage system renovation
1997 – New windows and siding for press box
2002 – Track resurfaced
2008 – New visiting team fan seating
