KIRKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

CORRELATION/CONNECTION TO KIRKWOOD STRATEGIC PLAN


STRATEGIC PLAN OBJECTIVES: (from the district CSIP)

            Each student:

  • Will master the EOC exams at the advanced level.
  • Who takes the ACT will score above the national average.
  • Will always demonstrate respect for themselves and others.

STRATEGIC PLAN STRATEGIES:  (from the district CSIP)

  • We will continuously collect and analyze student data to maximize instruction that meets the unique needs of each student.
  • Our educators will have the skills to effectively use innovative instructional strategies, instructional design, and resources that enable students to achieve academic excellence.
  • We will create an environment that nurtures respect, understanding, and openness toward others.
TARGET:Students will be proficient in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

GOAL 1:  ALL STUDENTS WILL GRADUATE.

Planned Strategies:

·     Review effectiveness of support programs (Atlas, SSD, Support Classes, Project Achieve, etc.) and make recommendations for future utilization.

  • Discussion with Michelle Albers on resources for data collection
  • Support meeting on Dec 10, 2010 for program evaluation

·     Research and identify interventions and support systems to keep students on track to graduate.

  • SRSS completed by staff to systematically identify students with risk factors
  • Building ASSIST team organized to review and discuss data
  • ASSIST exploring PBIS strategies
  • Research on GIFTED supports completed and strategies identified for possible implementation

·     Utilize 4-year plan to help students find career path, develop academic goals, and identify needs

  • 4 year plans began with Class of 2013.
  • Counselors making visits to classroom for discussions
  • Career Clusters added to Course Book for 2011-2012.

GOAL 2: ALL STUDENTS TAKING THE ACT WILL SCORE ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

Planned Strategies:

·     Provide staff development and implement strategies in the classroom that are shown to improve student success on the ACT.

·     Develop curriculum and assessments for a new ACT prep course.

  • ACT prep course implemented during ESY 2010
  • Continuing with after school ACT prep courses

GOAL 3:  THE STUDENT PASS RATE ON ADVANCE PLACEMENT WILL INCREASE ANNUALLY

Planned Strategies:

Research and identify strategies that are shown to improve student success on the AP.

Provide staff time to share best practices that enhance student learning in AP classes.
  • AP teachers working together during staff development 2010-2011
GOAL 4: EIGHTY PERCENT OF ALL STUDENTS WHO TAKE THE END OF COURSE (EOC) EXAMS WILL SCORE ADVANCED OR PROFICIENT.

Planned Strategies:

Research, identify, and implement best practices that lead to student proficiency in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Evaluate grading and reporting practices, including evaluation and feedback, to determine effectiveness in student learning.
  • Reviewing EOC data to find strategies to increase success for ALL subgroups
Review and align curriculum and assessments to the Course Level Expectations (CLEs) and EOC exams.
  • Departments reviewed EOC data and made adjustments based on needs
Write common formative and summative assessments for continuous review of student data.

 TARGET: Promote a climate of respect and understanding for all members of the school community.


GOAL 1:  PROVIDE A SAFE AND WELCOMING SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

BASELINE DATA BEING COLLECTED IN 2010 UNITE SURVEY


Planned Strategies:

Administer the UNITE survey to determine needs.

Provide training and activities to promote respect and understanding (ie We are Kirkwood, UNITE PSAs)

Communicate and maintain stand that KHS will not tolerate hateful, harmful, or disrespectful language/behavior towards others (ie Anti Bullying, No Hate)

Students will develop character and social skills needed to make meaningful contributions to the community.

Planned Strategies

Consider providing a wider range of service learning opportunities.

Increase leadership opportunities for students.

ASSIST team will research and discuss implementation of PBIS strategies.
