Apparel I (6201)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Students will learn to use a sewing machine correctly and safely, to read and follow instructions in a commercial pattern and to identify sewing techniques, which produce high quality garments. They will make two fantastic garments while learning and practicing these skills. The projects include a skirt and a shirt. Students must provide their own materials for this class.
Apparel II (6202)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: One-half credit earned in Apparel I (recommended C or better)
In this hands on lab course students will make a garment using plaids, stripes or one way designs and either a coat or jacket. The student will build on basic skills, learn new techniques, and have an opportunity to work with interesting fabrics, linings and special seam finishes. Students must provide their own materials for this class and are expected to have them by day 2.
Child Development I (6255)
Grade: 10*, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: *** Only 2nd Semester Sophomores and up may enroll in this class.
Students will spend one quarter in the classroom studying characteristics of young children from birth to five. Students will study prenatal development, early childhood developmental areas, birth defects and various other topics. During the second quarter students will do a practicum in a preschool setting or elementary setting. An attendance policy is in place for this course.
Child Development II (6256)
Grade: 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: One-half credit earned in Child Development I
This course is a continuation of Child Development I. Students will spend one quarter in the classroom studying characteristics of the school-age child. Focus will be on the changes and advances made by children during these years, providing insight into personal growth and development. During the second quarter students will do a practicum in an elementary setting. An attendance policy is in place for this course.
Foods and Nutrition I (6326)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
This is an introductory course, which highlights nutritional requirements for healthy living as well as basic food preparation techniques. Students will prepare a variety of foods and evaluate them for flavor and appearance. Kitchen equipment and its proper use, as well as safety and sanitation in the kitchen are discussed.
Foods and Nutrition II (6327)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: One-half credit earned in Foods and Nutrition I
This course will focus on advanced skills necessary in the culinary arts. Nutritional contributions of foods are reviewed and discussed. Food preparation, presentation and advanced cooking methods are demonstrated and practiced by the student. Career opportunities in the culinary arts are identified and discussed. Students will prepare a variety of foods and evaluate them for flavor, appearance and presentation.
Health Human Relations 9 10 (6316) - Grade: 9, 10
Health Human Relations 11 12 (6317) - Grade: 11, 12
1/2 Practical Art or 1/2 Health Credit - Length: 1 Semester
This course allows students to gain an awareness of techniques for improving communication skills in relationships. Students will utilize these communication skills to explore stereotyping, racism, abuse and violence that occur in our society. Along with an in-depth study of human sexuality (the reproductive system, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS) students will become aware of alcohol/drug abuse and the harmful effects on the mind and body. All of these topics will be examined through research, individual and group projects, oral presentations, and class discussion.
Independent Child Development (6258)
Grade: 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: 1/2 credit earned in Child Development I & II, Teacher Approval Form Required
Students who have completed Child Development I & II will continue their study of Early Childhood Education. Students will complete one semester of a practicum in a preschool or an elementary setting. Students will keep a portfolio of projects assigned by both the cooperating teacher and Child Development teacher. Students must provide their own transportation. An attendance policy is in place for this course.
Intro to Fashion & Interior Design (6207)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
This course focuses on the introductory principles of design, vocabulary, color, and development of artistic skills in both Interior Design and Fashion Design. One quarter will focus on Interior Design and the other quarter on Fashion Design. Career paths in design are researched and discussed.
Fashion & Textile Design (6212)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Take your fashion skills and interest to the next level. This course is entirely dedicated to the fashion industry. Students will explore the history of fashion, current trends and designers as well as the merchandising and marketing of the fashion industry. Student’s final project will be to design a clothing line from start to finish.
Interior Design (6305)
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 - 1/2 Practical Art Credit - Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: 1/2 credit earned in Intro to Fashion & Interior Design
Thinking of being an Interior Designer? This course is designed to take the student beyond the introductory level of interior design and enhance their skills learned in Intro To Fashion & Interior Design. Students will learn to create attractive and functional living spaces, enhance a floor plan, sketching skills and experiment with color, fabric and furniture. Student’s final project will be the creation of a complete house design.
