Selection Process for National Honor Society 2011-2012
Candidate Selection Packets due by Thursday, September 22nd in W-120
The four pillars of National Honor Society will determine a candidate's qualification:
1. Scholarship: Is currently a Junior or Senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.
2. Leadership: Action taken by the student which initiates, shapes, motivates or defines a group or activity within the school or the community.
3. Service: Action taken by the student which is done on the behalf of others without direct financial or material compensation. These actions may benefit the school, other classmates or the community.
4. Character: Actions of the student display the Six Pillars of Character--Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Student's discipline record will be evaluated.
In order to be a member of National Honor Society, you must complete the following process that demonstrates your excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character.
Prospective Candidate Process:
1. Pick up Candidate Selection Packet from W-120 and verify minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. You will receive a numbered Selection Packet to complete. You must return the Selection Packet assigned to you before the deadline of September 30th in order to be considered for NHS. Please refrain from using your name in the Leadership, Service, Character and Sample Writing sections. Include the Candidate Selection Number on all materials returned.
2. Complete Leadership, Service and Character portions of Selection Packet using blue or black ink. Address the envelope included in the packet. Return packet with all pages in order to W-120 by Thursday, September 22nd by 3:00 pm.
3. Faculty and Staff will be given the opportunity to provide character feedback on all prospective members. The Faculty Council will only receive anonymous feedback to better determine character. Also, each prospective member's discipline record will be assessed.
4. A Faculty Council will anonymously review the information provided by the candidate and make a decision by mid-October. The candidate will be notified by mail of the selection results.
5. Students who are selected will be invited to an informational meeting to explain the expectations of membership. Membership will then be made official through the payment of $10 for yearly dues and a formal induction ceremony in November.
Tutorials for Prospective Candidates will be offered each homeroom in W-120 until Candidate Selection Packet due date on Thursday September 22nd.
