Prerequisite:
  • Reading at grade level

Reading Expectations: 
  • 4 books, homework 3-4 nights a week, average assignment:  15-20 pages

Required Readings: 
  • Homer’s The Odyssey, Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

Teacher Option Readings:  
  • Anderson’s Speak, Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Knowles’ A Separate Peace, Meyer’s Monster, Wright’s Rite of Passage, Sophocles’ Oedipus the King

Writing Expectations:
  • Students will be required to compose at least two formal pieces of writing per quarter.
  • Through the process of reading, thinking, writing and reflecting, students study fiction, non-fiction, drama and poetry.  Freshman Literature and Composition prepares students for high school reading and writing in English and other subjects.  Mastery of sentence and paragraph structure with proper usage and mechanics is one goal of this year-long course.  Clear, logical, well-supported writing is emphasized.  Students learn, practice, and become competent writers of the expository essay, learning how to organize, structure and support their writing using MLA citation, embedded quotes, and transitions in writing multi-paragraph essays.
