Principal's Message

Where am I?

Hello Pioneer Parents:

The ’08-’09 school year is off to a fantastic start. We continue to revel in the pleasure that your kids bring to us. Their spontaneity and the sheer joy with which they approach their lives keep our spirits alive and our hearts warm. We are truly grateful for our kids at KHS.

The most significant changes in our school are the benefit of Prop i which was passed in 2006. In addition to upgrades to our infrastructure we have many improvements to our facility which will greatly enhance the entire high school experience of our kids. The Walker Science Building is in its second year of operation. Our renovated World Language Building and our Varsity Gym were opened during the last school year. This year we returned to a renovation in our Auxiliary Gym. In that space we now have large expansions to our Fitness Center, our Dance Studio, and our Wrestling Room. Coach Velten will move his office from the Northwest Building to the gym complex. We are excited about all of these great changes and are thankful for your support.

Often one hears people bemoan the state of public education in America. When our school opened this year and I could see our kids, our staff, and our fabulous facility I realized once again that those conversations do not include Kirkwood High School. We continue to work to improve KHS to make it the best high school in America. Our goal is to help each child find his/her passion and develop systems so that each student will be successful. I’m not sure we’re there yet, but I know that we are in the conversation of the greatest public high schools in America.

As always, we appreciate your support.
