Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior
Where am I?
Levels categorize all infractions. The Attendance Guidelines and consequences stand alone in our discipline policy- Level I are teacher-centered infractions, while Levels II - V are referred to the grade level principal and are considered more severe infractions as the levels increase.
Level I - Requiring Teacher Intervention
A. Preparation for class
1. Failure to bring necessary materials to class (books. paper. pencils, calculator. etc.)
2. Failure to do class work, assignments, project, etc.
3. Copying homework.
4. Failure to pay attention or participate appropriately.
5. Inappropriate cell phone use.
Consequences:
First - Third offenses:
1. Private conference with student
2. Phone call or conference with parent
3. Home assignments monitored by parents
4. Assignment of a written plan of action (academic contract)
5. Before or after school detention with teacher
6. No credit for work completed (consequence for copying homework only)
7. Additional Offenses: A discipline referral is completed and forwarded to the grade level office
B. Respect & Consideration:
1. Having inappropriate items (as listed under I. D. & F. on page 34) in class/school.
2. Interrupting or interfering with the work of others (talking, pestering, etc.)
3. Making rude or disrespectful comments to other students
4. Minor inappropriate behavior toward teacher
5. Engaging in any other disrespectful or disruptive behavior which is relatively minor in nature
6. Inappropriate display of affection
Consequences:
First -Third offenses:
1. Confiscation of inappropriate item by teacher or administrator and will be held for a minimum of the remainder of the day
2. Private conference with student
3. Phone call or conference with parents
4. Loss of privileges for a specific period of time
5. Assignment of a written plan of action (Behavioral contract)
Additional Offenses: A discipline referral is completed and forwarded to the grade level office
Level II - Requiring Administrative Intervention
A. Failing to attend a detention or mandatory teacher detention
B. Forging or falsifying documents or notes
C. Uncooperative behavior toward teacher
D. Engaging in inappropriate behavior toward self or others
E. Repeated classroom disruption
F. Using profanity or vulgar language
G. Spreading hurtful rumors
H. Distribution of written materials or insignia which is obscene, insulting, distribution of non-curricular materials without principal approval
Consequences:
First offense: One to three hours of detention or extended detention and/or LOP
Second offense: One day of ISS
Third offense: Three days of ISS
Additional offenses: Minimum three days OSS
Level III - Inappropriate Behavior Requiring Administrative Intervention
A. Unauthorized possession of school materials
B. Cheating or plagiarism
C. Gambling or betting
D. Using and/or possessing any tobacco products
E. Possessing or using disruptive items
F. Engaging in dangerous behavior toward self or others
G. Scuffling or play-fighting
H. Harassment/Hazing
I. Defacing school property
J. Failing to follow a staff member's directive
K. Lying to a staff member
L. Inappropriate use of district technology/student workstation
M. Usage of gang signs, gestures, language
N. Reckless driving on school grounds or at school functions
O. Repeated inappropriate behavior that other attempts have failed to correct
Consequences:
First offense: Two hours of detention and/or LOP and/or Extended Detention (no credit for assignment if cheating.
Second offense: One to three days of ISS
Third offense: Three to five days of ISS
Fourth offense: Minimum three days of OSS
Additional offenses: Five, then seven, then ten days of OSS; Any ten day suspension will be referred to the Assistant Superintendent for a discipline hearing.
Level IV - Inappropriate Behavior Requiring Administrative Intervention
A. Inciting a fight
B. Possession or using fireworks/dangerous items
C. Intimidation or extortion, threatening other students, engaging in threatening behavior
D. Chronic disciplinary violations
E. Indecent exposure, indecent act, or sexual harassment
F. Fighting or joining into a fight
G. Physical aggression/Physical hazing/bullying
H. Engaging in vandalism
I. Disrespect, defiance, or insubordination toward adults
J. Obstructing or interfering with adults trying to reach a crisis situation
K. Stealing or being in possession of another's property
L. Damage to hardware (such as computers, telephones or video equipment)
M. Inappropriate use of 911; Setting a false alarm or communicating a threat or false report for purpose of frightening, disturbing, or causing the evacuation or closure of school.
N. Inappropriate use or tampering with district technology/teacher workstation
O. Being on campus or attending a school function while on Out-Of-School Suspension
Consequences:
First offense: OSS: up to ten days
Second offense: OSS: five to ten days with a possible recommendation for up to I80-day suspension
Additional offenses: OSS: ten days and a possible recommendation for up to 180-day suspension and a possible recommendation for expulsion.
Level V - Inappropriate Behavior of the Utmost Severity Requiring Administrative Intervention
A. Threatening a staff member
B. Assaulting a staff member
C. Possessing or using a weapon
D. Possessing, using, or being under the influence of drugs/chemicals or substances represented to be such (see consequences in policy JFCH)
E. Selling or distributing drugs/chemicals or substances represented to be such
F. Presenting a threat to the lives of others or engaging in activities that mimic terrorism
G. Assaulting another student
Consequences:
Out-of-school suspension for 10 days with a possible recommendation for up to 180 days suspension and a possible recommendation for expulsion and possibility of pressing charges with the police.
